simple-scan doesn't scan from HP M1522nf (MFP), while xsane works

This seems to be related to the drivers/backends. These change with
Ubuntu releases independant of simple-scan, and have a tendency to be
rather fragile. Can someone confirm that there is a problem with the
following setup:
- hp scanner (please scpecify exactly)
- Ubuntu 12.04 precise
From merged bug:
I have a HP LaserJet m1120 MFP. Printing works perfect and scanning with
xsane too.
When running it from the terminal, this is the error I got after trying
to scan (it starts scanning and it shows the image being scanned, but
when it is done it says something along the lines of

I am using Natty on both of my machine and this is very weird.
Simple-scan works on one of the machine, while it fails on the other machine
(exactly as specified in this bug).
If you need any further information (from both machine), I'll be happy to
assist.

I've just made some tests on the machine in which simple-scan is not working.
It looks to be irregular behavior.
The test goes like this:
Try to scan 1 - fail.
Start a new document, discard the previous.
Try to scan 2 - fail.
Start a new document, discard the previous.
Try to scan 3 - Success.

Here is a simple workaround for those of us who are using HPLIP:
In the configuration, use xsane instead of simple-scan
(just type xsane in the scan command line)

Same problem in Maverick with a HP LaserJet M2727nf MFP. The last lines
of ltrace scanimage 21 | grep sane_ read:

sane_get_parameters(0x84ec568, 0xbfc8bb24, 0, 0xbfc8bb54, 0) = 0

simple-scan log below. I'm available to provide any other info, needed,
to make it work
