try adding all ubuntu repositories and then
apt-get install gstreamer0.10*
and a bunch of codecs 'll be installed.

I've got the same problem with Kubuntu 6.10 (Edgy). I found out that I
can start it with pitivi --sync and then see the programm window. But
when I try to add an avi/mpeg to it, it gives me an error: The
following files weren't discovered properly: unknown stream type, but I
can add mp3 files.
I also have similar issues with Istanbul Bug #69825 - I wonder if this
is a GStreamer issue. Could someone else that has Pitivi issues please
try Istanbul and comment on that bug?

+1 here. Using updated Edgy Knot 3. I too can run it with --sync.
