installed (by mistake) a package that depended on ubuntu-mobile-
default-settings. Removing this package solved the problem :-)

Sounds like you installed some sort of window maximizing program like
maximus or somesuch.

How many different Window managers do you have running and which styles
do you have enabled (KDE, GNOME, etc) and/or compiz?
They could be interacting/counteracting each other.

I have installed and used only KDE and Gnome, and I turned off all
desktop effects (long before the problem occurred).
