Description of problem:
There is a regression in ntp in the latest version; communication with certain
other time servers is really slow and would then be dropped before completion.
See logs of the ntpdate -d with both p1 and p2 versions below. This affects
Debian testing and Gentoo as well.

[Bug 787551] Re: ntpdate 4.2.6p2@1.2194-o: no server suitable for synchronization found - works with 4.2.4p8@1.1612-o

2011-06-13 Thread Dave Walker
** Description changed:

- Binary package hint: ntpdate
+ IMPACT: When attempting to sync to some ntp servers, a failure is
consistently produced.
+ FIXED: In oneiric and upstream 4.2.6p3-RC9 or 4.2.7p80
+ PATCH: debdiff attached.
+ REPRODUCE: On Natty run ntpdate against an NTP server where receive and
transmit timestamps are equal (Includes windows server 2003).

- ntpdate on natty (4.2.6p2@1.2194-o) fails to sync with server, while
- lucid server ntpdate works
+ Test: ntpdate xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx

- Issue seems to be identical to
+ Expected failure is:
+ ntpdate[7149]: no server suitable for synchronization found

- http://bugs.ntp.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1709
+ Expected success is (example):
+ ntpdate[13959]: adjust time server 66.36.239.66 offset 0.144635 sec

- Bug was introduced in 4.2.6p2, should be fixed in 4.2.6p3 (see links)
-
- Please note also, that ntp.org is deprecating ntpdate (see
- http://support.ntp.org/bin/view/Dev/DeprecatingNtpdate )).
-
- # lsb_release -rd
- Description:Ubuntu 11.04
- Release:11.04
- # apt-cache policy ntpdate
- ntpdate:
- Installed: 1:4.2.6.p2+dfsg-1ubuntu5
- Candidate: 1:4.2.6.p2+dfsg-1ubuntu5
- Version table:
- *** 1:4.2.6.p2+dfsg-1ubuntu5 0
- 500 http://ubuntu-proxy-ehealth.d03.arc.local/ubuntu/ natty/main i386
Packages
- 100 /var/lib/dpkg/status
+ DISCUSSION:
+ Regression potential is considered low. It is a patch cherry picked from
upstream, and has been fixed in some other distros since December 2010.

Confirmed on natty and oneiric. Thanks to Patrick Domack (~patrickdk)
for allowing me access to a Windows 2003 ntp server.

[Bug 787551] Re: ntpdate 4.2.6p2@1.2194-o: no server suitable for synchronization found - works with 4.2.4p8@1.1612-o

2011-06-13 Thread Dave Walker
** Description changed:

- Binary package hint: ntpdate
+ IMPACT: When attempting to sync to some ntp servers, a failure is
consistently produced.
+ FIXED: In oneiric and upstream 4.2.6p3-RC9 or 4.2.7p80
+ PATCH: debdiff attached.
+ REPRODUCE: On Natty run ntpdate against an NTP server where receive and
transmit timestamps are equal (Includes windows server 2003).

- ntpdate on natty (4.2.6p2@1.2194-o) fails to sync with server, while
- lucid server ntpdate works
+ Test: ntpdate xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx

- Issue seems to be identical to
+ Expected failure is:
+ ntpdate[7149]: no server suitable for synchronization found

- http://bugs.ntp.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1709
+ Expected success is (example):
+ ntpdate[13959]: adjust time server 66.36.239.66 offset 0.144635 sec

- Bug was introduced in 4.2.6p2, should be fixed in 4.2.6p3 (see links)
-
- Please note also, that ntp.org is deprecating ntpdate (see
- http://support.ntp.org/bin/view/Dev/DeprecatingNtpdate )).
-
- # lsb_release -rd
- Description:Ubuntu 11.04
- Release:11.04
- # apt-cache policy ntpdate
- ntpdate:
- Installed: 1:4.2.6.p2+dfsg-1ubuntu5
- Candidate: 1:4.2.6.p2+dfsg-1ubuntu5
- Version table:
- *** 1:4.2.6.p2+dfsg-1ubuntu5 0
- 500 http://ubuntu-proxy-ehealth.d03.arc.local/ubuntu/ natty/main i386
Packages
- 100 /var/lib/dpkg/status
+ DISCUSSION:
+ Regression potential is considered low. It is a patch cherry picked from
upstream, and has been fixed in some other distros since December 2010.

2011-05-31 Thread David Harper
Can confirm this doesn't work in Natty, but does in Lucid.

sudo ntpdate 0.pool.ntp.org
31 May 12:14:34 ntpdate[7104]: no server suitable for synchronization found

Is 4.2.6p3 due to be uploaded into Natty (or backports)?
