Next UDS: 11 - 13 March 2014
Hi Everyone, My apologies for the delay in announcing the next Ubuntu Developer Summit. The last few months have been somewhat hectic and we wanted to wait for some confirmed conference/sprint dates across Ubuntu Engineering and cross-check those with our release schedule before committing to final dates so we can ensure as many people are there as possible. I can now confirm that our next Ubuntu Developer Summit will take place from *Tues 11th March 2014 - Thurs 13th March 2014*. I wanted to let you all know ASAP so you can get it in your calendars. summit.ubuntu.com is updated and ready to start having sessions added or proposed (http://summit.ubuntu.com/uds-1403/). This next UDS will look and feel much like the last one; the same tracks and format. The feedback we have received from the last UDS suggests that the changes we made were well received. As ever, your feedback is always welcome. We would like to ask everyone to get their sessions scheduled by *Fri 21st Feb 2014*; this gives potential attendees time to coordinate time away from work to join the sessions. If you want to have a session at UDS, please see http://uds.ubuntu.com/getinvolved/propose-a-session/ for how to propose it. As usual, feel free to ask for help from myself or Michael Hall, David Planella, or Daniel Holbach, Thanks, Jono -- Jono Bacon Ubuntu Community Manager www.ubuntu.com / www.jonobacon.org www.identi.ca/jonobacon www.twitter.com/jonobacon -- ubuntu-desktop mailing list ubuntu-desktop@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-desktop
Re: Default File Manager with Unity8 in future desktops
Hi, On Thu, Jan 30, 2014 at 9:21 AM, Oliver Grawert o...@ubuntu.com wrote: hi, with the planned switch to unity8 in 14.10 it is most likely that we will also start using the converged QML apps that are developed today. With all the complaints and unhappyness about Nautilus upstream ripping out things like dual pane and other beloved and helpful features I expect we can do better and I think this is the right time to: a) collect requirements b) file whishlist bugs c) if *you* want to contribute, get in contact with the developers (CCed) the new core apps are all 100% developed by the community under guidance of the canonical design team. ...and the community team. ;-) the code for the filemanager can be found at https://launchpad.net/ubuntu-filemanager-app it is running on phone and tablets already and has a proper convergence mode adapting to bigger screens. lets get the discussion rolling ;) I think this is a great time to understand what the File Manager app would need to do for it to provide core feature parity on the desktop. I think though we should constrain this around what it needs as a minimum to ship as opposed to a Christmas list of ideas. The File Manager team has been doing a tremendous job, and maybe a good first goal is that it is shippable (maybe not by default) with 14.04 and the Unity 8 preview session. Re: Default Desktop Experience for 11.04 - User testing results

Back at UDS for 11.04 in Orlando, Mark set the goal of using Unity by default on the Ubutu desktop. Given the current course of development, it appears that we are going to achieve this goal, and Unity will stay the default for 11.04. I'm following up on this list at the suggestion of the Tech Board to give folks a chance to respond or escelate any concerns. ... Last week, Charline Poirier ran a user test of Unity, with 11 individual participants. This week, I have helped Charline analyze the results. snip Wonderful work, and now very visible work: http://news.slashdot.org/story/11/04/16/0239213/5-Out-of-11-Crashed-Unity-In-Canonicals-Study ;-) I think this feedback points to a series of design and engineering bugs that we need to resolve in 11.10. Have the design bugs been filed in Launchpad? I think it could be worthwhile to rate the prioritization of the design bugs based upon the level of success in your study. As an example, if 1/12 achieved a task, it would be a high priority bug, as opposed to if 10/12 achieved the task it would be a low priority bug. I just want to ensure that we build this feedback into the design and engineering iteration process. OpenShot instead of PiTiVi
Hi All, Recently I have been using OpenShot with some good success. While there are some crasher issues, it seems the app demonstrates a great feature set and good meet the needs of our users well. It currently has 4/5 in the Ubuntu Software Center. I wanted to check in and see if there has been any assessment of whether OpenShot would be a better choice than PiTiVi for the CD? I suspect the dependency chain is greater, which may cause disk space issues, but I wasn't sure if anyone has had this discussion (maybe at a UDS?) before? Grouping Windows in the Taskbar
Hi All, I don't know if this has been raised, but one lesser-known feature I always switch on is 'Always Group Windows' in the taskbar preferences. This will group related windows under the same entry. As an example use case, when I have Thunderbird open and I have a call with my team, I open new Compose Mail windows to remind me to send emails. On a default install this clutter the taskbar but when I enable this feature, I just click the single Thunderbird entry and I have a list of Thunderbird windows I can click on. I know it is late in the cycle, but is this something that would be a simple but useful default configuration option? The reason to stop installing ekiga by default is the lack of CD space combined with the perception that ekiga is not a standard desktop user application but something the few people rely on can get from internet I entirely agree in the intention to free up disc space by removing Ekiga, my only concern is if we are going to ship the audio and video features in Empathy if they are so unreliable.
