You're in a root shell, you say?
If so you just need to cat /etc/passwd and you should find your
username there... if you then don't know the password use passwd
username to set it to something new.

Isto aconteceu comigo há umas duas semanas (uso Ubuntu 7.10).
O som não tocava de jeito nenhum e eu não sabia o porquê.
Como tenho dual boot, entrei no Windows para testar e funcionou...
Voltei para o Linux para checar as configurações de som e acredite, havia um
controle no mute!

Tinha visto seu tópico antes, mas não respondi porque não tinha uma máquina
com Xubuntu 8.04 ao alcançe. Tenho uma no lugar onde trabalho.
Como essa minha instalação foi na verdade feita em cima de ubuntu por
padrão, pode ser que
Hoje instalei o 2.6.27-11-generic e tanto o Cheese como o XawTv
funcionam novamente.

Faço sempre as atualizações do sistema no meu Ubuntu 8.10 de 32-Bit, mas
reparei que os programas são atualizados e os Kerneis não são.
Fiz um ls /lib/modules/ para saber que versões estão instaladas e me
retornou o seguinte:
2.6.27-11-generic
2.6.27-7-generic

Calma, homem :( O HD com o Xubuntu não está aqui comigo, está em casa
