Alas, i ran jockey (jockey-gtk), but no change. I still get the spinner,
and no window borders. (Actually, the message i get when enabling
desktop effects for the first time is this: Searching for available
drivers.) The jockey's output was: no proprietary drivers were found on

Just clean installed the Ubuntu RC and it took 7 attempts for xsplash to
kick in (requiring a powering off and on of the laptop every time), and

dialog). I think the importance should be higher, as calling with

I'm going to say it's fixed, as I found a solution to the problem.
Reboot the computer. If anyone can figure out WHY it happens, though (note -
only Synaptic has been tested, others will be tested later, if report does not
come within a half hour, they work.)

Also, when updating images in Virtualbox of ubunto the
'VBoxLinuxAdditions' are wiped out and need to be re-installed. This is
true of both VBoxLinuxAdditions-x86.run, and VBoxLinuxAdditions-
amd64.run.
Updates that re-write the generic kernel do not take into account user
installed programs.
Oh and also, the window is totally clogged up when you start it because
it's analyzing the system...

I can confirm this bug on a Dell Inspiron 8100 laptop with ESS
Technology Maestro hardware.
On start up, the sound level is reduced to 0, to get sound I have to
increase the volume level rather than unmuting it.
I'll try and give more details/info when I get back to laptop later
today.

I can confirm this bug but could not confirm the workaround. The only
workaround that worked for me is to set the backlight control in the
bios to user control instead the default, because then the brightness
is not reduced on battery.
But if i reduce the backlight brightness before booting
Adjusting the minimal font size does help in making text readable, but
the result is that, e.g., headings that would have a smaller size than
the minimal font size will have the same size as the text. That's not
what I want in a graphical browser.

when trying to install svk it fails because bash-completion already has

had to uninstall bash-completion to be able to install svk

not a gnome-panel bug in any case, either wrong .desktop or icon cache
or user files or whatever but not a bug there

I'm sure the problem is in nautilus because though Okular installs lots
of .desktop files it only installs one .desktop file that says is able
to handle

I'm on the same system setup and installing telepathy-
butterfly_0.5.2-1~ppa9.10+1_all.deb from the PPA fixed the issue for me.
It also fixed the problem I was experiencing with no notification popups
