envy to install them ( www.ablertomilone.com) and the
problem returned. A friend has suggested it might be an Open GL
conflict somewhere along the lines, but I am at a loss on how to
proceed now.

On a fresh install of Gutsy once I installed the Nvidia driver from the
restricted list, and rebooted my system came up at 1280x1024 resolution -
something Feisty always refused to do for me.
I went ahead and popped into the Add /Remove applications area to see what
I can't run the commands during add / rmove as the pc totally hangs as
soon as I open the application. Attached the files with the NVidia
driver enabled. And by the way - I'm pretty much a Linux noob - but
willing to learn ;)
