Hello,
I see a similar problem on Karmic when using autofs to mount CIFS
shares. If I turn off my computer while a share is still mounted, the
computer will stay upon killing all remaining process line
indefinitely. If I add a script similar to the one proposed in
/etc/network/if-down.d to umount
It has not been fixed in Karmic.

Hi Spaetz. That fix was documented as early as comment 7 and is
discussed thoroughly throughout the 110 or so comments. Sadly, the fix
doesn't work in Karmic any more. Well, I'll qualify that - it works for
wired connections, but not for WIFI. Network Manager brings WIFI
connections down

Not as relevant here, but to point out, there are other differences in the 2
files:
- uec has 'ancestor-ami-ids' field (probably ok)
- ec2 has instance-action
- uec has 'product-codes' . apparently if there are none, ec2 doesn't present
that in the metadata
- the noted public-keys difference
