Problem started with failure to update my sites after my system hung and
forced hard shutdown. On rebooting, could not get the server to

I think that you can basically ignore my comment #5.
When I was seeing this issue, when booting with kvm, I was not booting with
'boot=on'.
After booting with boot=on, the problem goes away. boot=on is generated in the
kvm command line by eucalyptus, so I don't think this will be an issue there.
should have been more explicit. With kvm:
- works: kvm -fda floppy.img -boot a -drive file=disk.img,if=virtio,boot=on
-curses
- fails: kvm -fda floppy.img -boot a -drive file=disk.img,if=virtio -curses

eucalyptus instance reboot fails: Guest moved used index from 0 to 2639
Still a problem in Lucid. I blacklisted the kvm_intel module by editing
the blacklist.conf file:
nano /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf
and adding
blacklist kvm_intel to the file.

Thanks for the advice -- if I wanted more of a guarantee, I would create
the /etc/ssh/sshd_not_to_be_run file. As it is, I still use sshd
occasionally. Let me know if you need anything else from me.

/etc/init.d/ssh stop doesn't work (sshd just won't die)
