I am having the same issue, and after several hours of research spread
across several days, I've come to this bug.
I agree with mohanv in that it should not have let me setup the node if
it won't work with UEC.
If kvm requires hardware supported virtual machines hvm, (as indicated
here:
Try this that has been working for me when I added a name (in /etc/hosts
host's file) to the IP used by the guess: $ sudo kill -HUP `pidof
dnsmasq`
Howerver I get a different (related trouble): custom host definition is not
honor with my configuration (even after rebooting the host). dnsmasq
Ok in fact I founded why this was not working. I deleted and recreated
my VM but there still was an entry corresponding to the old one in
/var/lib/libvirt/dnsmasq/default.hostsfile. So I modified the MAC
address and now it is working like a charm (after using HUP signal).

Problem still exists in 10.04 (probably also 10.10).
Another workaround: Add a sleep time at the autostart section of
/etc/init.d/openvpn before the start_vpn command.
if ! ip addr show dev eth0 | grep -q 'inet' ; then
sleep 10

Of course change eth0 to whatever device OpenVPN is listening

My best guess (without actually looking at code at all) is that due to
the console fd closing, libvirt thinks the domain has died or crashed or
something and then it reaps it.
