This only happens if you choose the virtual flavor. Or at least if I do

I have this problem too - it's happening on roughly half my slice
builds.
It seems to be due to the grub installation failing, here's what it
shows for a build that won't boot:
** [out :: host-nwtn1.nwtn] 2013-03-17 10:52:33,044 DEBUG : ['chroot',
'/tmp/tmpgvQfyy', 'grub',

Just found this one after posting on #946022. I have the same problem.
For me it occurs around half the time. Fails in the same way in grub:
** [out :: host-nwtn1.nwtn] 2013-03-17 10:52:33,044 DEBUG : ['chroot',
'/tmp/tmpgvQfyy', 'grub', '--device-map=/tmp/vmbuilder-grub/device.map',
I ran into this awhile back before finding this bug, and resolved the
problem with the attached changes. I'm serving pop3 and managesieve in
addition to imap, so this patch covers and is tested for those cases
too.
** Patch added: 0001-update-dovecot-script-for-Ubuntu-12.04.patch
I found the problem. This fixed it:
chmod 755 /opt/backups
Thanks for checking.

I could be misunderstanding the problem here, I think we've had trouble
with the 32/63 thing in other respects too, such as getting corrupted
disk images when someone uses something other than parted (or uses
parted but doesn't change the sector size) to resize the partitions.
Would it be worth
Chris, could you check whether the sudoers file on the host has the sudo
