Is this going to be back-ported to raring?
If not, is there an alternative command I can use on the raring version
to do a similar thing to:

I've reported this upstream, since I don't see that this bug will get
fixed any other way:

I'm dubious about calling this a security vulnerability. I can see your
logic, but this bug's root cause is the fundamental
I too needed to know when security packages were available so I cooked
my own (*) wrapper around /usr/lib/update-notifier/apt-check. It works
well and also provides perf_data for those who'd like to visualize the
package availability.

Sorry guys .. this ist _NOT_ a security issue (at least no one of

Opening a but upstream might a good idea, but upstream doesn't work on
debian systems. So it's up to you guys to present (useful and senseful)
patches which might be adopted upstream.

This probably refers to the 'static-network-up' event.
In my case this maybe enough, as I use static configured network interfaces,
but what if smbd is bound to a interface using DHCP?
I did not check if this case will work. But I think smbd should handle binding

Hey Serge, let me know if that repro worked for you or when you're
planning to give it a try. I'm keeping the VM image around in case you
need it.
What's odd is that I can't even reproduce it with the daily ppa build,
which doesn't have the workaround which is in the ubuntu package.
