After quite some analysis and debugging I could identify an issue regarding
double configuring the device.
Daniele replied to the mailing list request I had and suggested backporting an
virtio fix that came after 2.2.
That worked well, with backporting these I can get it to work now.

Reading through dh_strip since we have no old -dbg package to care about
it might be enough to just do:
export EXTRA_CFLAGS = -g
- the export makes sure we build it for all binaries
- dh_strip magically does the right thing and should create a dbgsym packages
as appropriate

Perhaps the following is helpful in tracing the problem. It is an
excerpt from /var/log/auth.log covering the ssh login from the iPad on
the server (srv01) in the situation described earlier, logged at
LogLevel DEBUG3:
Mar 23 08:33:14 srv01 sshd[1782]: Connection from ***.***.***.66 port 59484 on
this is fixed at least in 16.04, from
/lib/systemd/system/krb5-kdc.service.d/slapd-before-kdc.conf:

DPDK is great but still bleeding edge from time to time.
So debugging is likely to happen at some point.
Therefore it would be great to have an explicit -dbg or implicit -dbgsyms
package such with debug symbols for DPDK 2.2 in Xenial.

One last time, hopefully for sure. This is what I did:
1) Created two ppas:

2) Had both PPAs devirted and enabled for all trusty architectures.
