A problem remains: Was having considerable difficulty installing NUT.
Same symptoms as above. That is:

u...@host:~$ sudo upsdrvctl start

resulted in:

Can't chdir to /var/run/nut: Permission denied
Driver failed to start (exit status=1)

After considerable difficulty I was convinced that I had compromised the
installation at which time I used Synaptic to remove NUT and then re-
install. Once again encountered the same issue. After much
searching/surfing I discovered this bug report. After executing

sudo usermod -G nut nut

NUT would run.

Configuration: Karmic, Belkin F6C900-UNV w/ USB interface.
