Julian: The patch I submitted fixed my problem (see #13 above).
Unfortunately I don't have time tonight to try to reproduce the
situation, and indeed I may not be able to (I'm not sure I have access
to the server anymore). But I can definitely confirm that it was still
fixed in LinuxMint 13 (Ubuntu
I'm curious on the status of this bug; it shows as Unassigned still;
The issue isn't fix in oneiric yet;
I ended up repackaging open-vmtools myself with the patch Ronny
Kotzschmar provided to resolve my issue.

Here's the patch. I made it on the v3-4-test branch of the Samba git
repository. It seems to also patch the current stable 3.5.8 version. I
hope this helps.

auth_log in auth.c is not changing the error logging function from
"authlog" to "logit" for this type of error (line 258). If you use "sshd
start -dd" you will get the failed attempt clearly on the screen but NOT
in auth.log.
NB. Setting LogLevel to VERBOSE does show the failed attempts quite well
roblem seems to be fixed. Thanks anyway!
