I've checked it, we have a puppet user in NIS but no puppet group. Btw. I don't think that NIS is directly the problem, I would expect the same problem with ldap. I think the script should check with getent if ther is a puppet user and only if there is no it should create the account. Then

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. The current logic is that the script looks for a puppet user, and if that doesn't exist then it creates a puppet user and group. Do you by any chance have a puppet user but no group in NIS? What do you think the
