Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. It looks like git's behaviour changed between 1:1.7.10.4-1ubuntu1 (Quantal) and 1:1.8.1.2-1 (Raring). If "dnsdomainname" returns empty, then git now fails, whereas before it proceeded with invalid committer/author
