You have been subscribed to a public bug by Robie Basak (racb): After upgrading to 14.04, all function Zlib-related function calls (gzopen() etc) fail with "Fatal error: Call to undefined function gzopen() in ...". Function names with 64 added to the end to them (gzopen64() etc) work as expected.
