There is a WORKAROUND for Ubuntu 14.04.2 LTS
add a /etc/whois.conf file as per
http://www.nux.ro/archive/2015/08/No_whois_server_is_known_for_this_kind_of_object.html
http://dl.nux.ro/utils/whois.conf

@dwjr87 - Marking as affecting me too but for what it's worth those
domains are resolvable in Vivid which has whois version 5.2.4
