Problem depends on guest. Steps to reproduce on Ubuntu 14.04 64bit
server kernel 3.19.0-28-generic and qemu-kvm.
* set up a guest with virt-manager and set up a virtio ethernet interface
* install FreeBSD 10.1 64bit as guest
* set up an usable IP address on vtnet0 (FreeBSD name of virtio
