Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu
better.

----------------

user@box:~$ date
Mon Apr 13 17:11:35 EDT 2020

"box" machine -> Apr 13 17:11 EDT

----------------

user@box:~$ ./reset-power-consumption-meter
+ sudo ipmi-oem dell reset-power-consumption-data cumulative
+ sudo ipmi-oem dell reset-power-consumption-data peak

You're resetting "power-consumption-data" from machine "box".

----------------

Then you're getting the power-consumption data from a machine "dmc12":

crow@dmc12:~$ sudo ipmi-oem dell get-power-consumption-data
Cumulative Energy Start Time : 04/14/20 - 01:11:36
Cumulative Energy : 0.00 kWh
Peak Amp Time : 04/13/20 - 07:26:45
Peak Amp : 3.80 A
Peak Watt Time : 04/13/20 - 07:26:43
Peak Watt : 454 W

----------------

Then you're getting the power-consumption data from the machine "box"
with UTC time:

user@box:~$ sudo ipmi-oem dell get-power-consumption-data --localtime-to-utc
Cumulative Energy Start Time : 04/14/20 - 06:11:36
Cumulative Energy : 0.00 kWh
Peak Amp Time : 04/13/20 - 12:26:45
Peak Amp : 3.80 A
Peak Watt Time : 04/13/20 - 12:26:43
Peak Watt : 454 W

----------------

Then you say:

"would be nice if adding the --localtime-to-utc option wasn't necessary"

> that is likely not going to happen due to IPMI specs:
> "By IPMI definition, all IPMI times and timestamps are stored in localtime."

"for some reason, the peak times are quite off"

> I did not understand what you mean, perhaps it's a side effect of the
statement bellow...

"and not being reset like the cumulative times are.." <- is this your
main problem ?

> Man page for ipmi-oem:

    "reset-power-consumption-data cumulative|peak

This OEM command can reset the cumulative or peak power consumption
data (viewed via get-power-consumption-data). Command confirmed
    to work on Dell Poweredge R610, R710, R905, M610, M610x, and M910.

> I don't see it being tested in a Dell R640 up to this version.

> Have you tried a more recent Ubuntu version to see if it is supported
?

Your freeipmi-tools version: 1.4.11-1.1ubuntu4.1
Most recent version (for Focal): 1.6.4-3ubuntu1

The next step is to identify whether this bug is present in the upstream
project, introduced in Debian packaging, or introduced in Ubuntu's
modifications. If Ubuntu has not introduced the problem, we should get a bug
filed in the appropriate upstream bug tracker. Are you able to help with
this, please?

If you do end up filing a bug upstream, please link to it here. Thanks!
