This happens to me on initial install of mysql-server on a Dell Mini 9
using the Dell-supplied version of Hardy.

I had the same problem when doing:
# mysqld_safe --skip-grant-tables
Actually everything started when I lost my root password for mysql, I
did followed this link http://lists.mysql.com/mysql/171366 and make a
mess out of my MYSQL, so beware!
I think I'll use this other one in the future in
