I had similar issue and just as piddy has diagnosed, my problem was because I
had renamed my /etc/samba/smb.conf to smb.conf.OLD earlier when experimenting
with mapiprofile. Problem went away once I reverted back the smb.conf.

sorry i mean, are you remove smb.conf manually,,,??
because i`ve got some problems when i install samba at 8.04,
and when i copy smb.conf to /etc/samba, the installation run complete,,

What happens if you run sudo /etc/init.d/samba start now ? Does it still fail
to start ?
Could you please provide relevant /var/log/syslog and /var/log/samba/* entries ?
