Ok, this can be caused by several things.
One would be a race condition between bridge-utils and vlan, this got fixed in
Precise so it'd be interesting for you to test with Precise alpha-2.
Another could be the switch between the two machines eating the tags, I've
seen that happen on some cheap
It's the same for 11.04, 10.10, 10.04, 9.10, 9.04 ...
I have set up on PC1:
/etc/networking/interfaces:
! auto eth0.114
! iface eth0.114 inet manual
! vlan-raw-device eth0
!
!auto vm1
!iface vm1 inet static
! address 192.168.114.94
! netmask 255.255.254.0
! bridge_fd 3
! bridge_hello 2

Lowering the MTU to 1492 doesn't help either.
It is just broken in Ubuntu!
