I installed Ubuntu 10.04 and have similar "freezes" as the above posts.
The screen finishes loading and all the menus and desktop loads fine but

I have a somewhat similar problem here where X11 becomes unresponsive. I
mostly run in KDE though.
The mouse cursor still moves but mouse events don't seem to register and
the keyboard appears dead although I

same here i also tried the purge irq balance but that did not help
same thing freezes sometimes at login ,sometimes after login and has
gotten worse

If freezing does not appear after you start Ubuntu in recovery mode and
type "gdm" - try to remove "irqbalance" (sudo aptitude purge
irqbalance). This solution helped me.
