If you run this in a terminal:
sudo dpkg --configure -a
Does it report the same error?
Also, after attempting that, can you attach this file:
No it didn't report the error after running the command. I've attached the
log.nmbd.

Brandon, thanks. It would appear that something went wrong in the pre-
start script. Could you grep for problems in /var/log/daemon.log ?
grep nmbd /var/log/daemon.log should do it.
