It seemed to be the UsePAM setting that made it.
When UsePAM is returned to the default 'yes' everything is fine.
For some reason (a tutorial on slicehost.com :-)) I set the UsePAM to 'no'

Maybe this isn't the right place to explain why that happened but if

Hardy SRU Report
Bug impact: When openvpn is already started, trying to start it using
the init script results in exit status 127. This can impact heartbeat
deployments as mentionned in comment 5.
Versions affected: Hardy (openvpn initscript was rewritten in Intrepid)
Minimal patch: see comment
Note that openvpn_2.1~rc7-1ubuntu3.4 is still sitting in -proposed, so
I'll work on confirming the fix for it (on bug 265058) as well.

Could you give the output of 'dpkg -l | grep samba' just to be sure that
you are running the patch version?
This seems to confirmed that the new version does fix Asynchronous I/O
result, but not the fact that setreSuid results in EAGAIN error.
This might not be a duplicate of bug 216358.
Could the reporter try the packages in my PPA and see if they fix it for him
