[Bug 479900] [NEW] Nut upgrade overwrites /etc/nut/nut.conf

2009-11-10 Thread Juha Aatrokoski
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nut

After upgrading from Jaunty to Karmic, I noticed that UPS monitoring
with nut stopped working. It took me a few moments to figure it out, but
then I noticed that /etc/nut/nut.conf had a new timestamp and in it the
variable MODE was (once again) set to empty instead of netserver which
it was on Jaunty. Changing this back fixed the UPS monitoring, but the
package upgrade should not overwrite the configuration file.

[Bug 40189] Re: autofs needs to be restarted to pick up some shares

2009-11-10 Thread Daniel J Blueman
This bug is still at large in Ubuntu 9.10, as observed on the desktop
x86-64 variant.

This may not be reproducible with 'static' configurations where the
automount tables are configured in files, but when they are specified in
nsswitch.conf as 'automount: ldap', this fails to initialise -
restarting the autofs service is needed.

If needed, let me know what area of detail is required to reproduce
this.

Why is this seen as low priotiry, it's causing no end of problems for
some of our servers running out of memory, I have to restart the

I tried to make a new libkrb53 package myself, but there are lots of
interdependencies which mean I would have to remake lots of other
packages. Please apply this patch and update the official Hardy

[Bug 479955] [NEW] winbind authentication fails after karmic upgrade

2009-11-10 Thread chrisa
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: samba

One of our users upgraded their Ubuntu workstation to 9.10 and they can
no longer authenticate via pam_winbind with the domain controller (Samba
3.3.7).

# apt-cache policy winbind
winbind:
  Installed: 2:3.4.0-3ubuntu5
  Candidate: 2:3.4.0-3ubuntu5
  Version table:
 *** 2:3.4.0-3ubuntu5 0
500 http://gb.archive.ubuntu.com karmic/main Packages
100 /var/lib/dpkg/status

After the upgrade, the following messages appear in the winbind log
every five minutes:

[2009/11/10 11:45:01, 0] libsmb/ntlmssp_sign.c:208(ntlmssp_check_packet)
NTLMSSP NTLM2 packet check failed due to invalid signature!
[2009/11/10 11:45:01, 0] rpc_client/cli_pipe.c:620(cli_pipe_verify_ntlmssp)
cli_pipe_verify_ntlmssp: failed to unseal packet from host SKIPPY. Error was
NT_STATUS_ACCESS_DENIED.

Attempting to authenticate results in the following:

# wbinfo -a chrisa
Enter chrisa's password:
plaintext password authentication failed
Could not authenticate user chrisa with plaintext password
Enter chrisa's password:
challenge/response password authentication failed
error code was NT code 0x1c010002 (0x1c010002)
error messsage was: NT code 0x1c010002
Could not authenticate user chrisa with challenge/response

And this message appears in the winbind log:

[2009/11/10 11:44:58, 1]
rpc_client/cli_pipe.c:948(cli_pipe_validate_current_pdu)
  cli_pipe_validate_current_pdu: RPC fault code DCERPC_FAULT_OP_RNG_ERROR
received from host SKIPPY!

This appears to match the behaviour mentioned in the upstream bug #6646 which
was fixed in Samba 3.4.1:
  https://bugzilla.samba.org/show_bug.cgi?id=6646

Patch looks quite trivial. Would it be possible to backport it?

Thanks,
Chris

[Bug 453335] Re: apparmor complains about write access to a readonly file

2009-11-10 Thread Jamie Strandboge
With libvirt 0.7.0-1ubuntu13.1 and kernel 2.6.31-15.49-generic, I get
the following in /etc/apparmor.d/libvirt/libvirt-uuid.files:

  /home/jamie/vms/isos/karmic/karmic-server-amd64.iso r,
  # don't audit writes to readonly media
  deny /home/jamie/vms/isos/karmic/karmic-server-amd64.iso w,

Starting the VM results in access to the iso without the confusing
denial message. In other words, this bug is fixed with the libvirt and
kernel packages in -proposed.

Again, please do not copy libvirt to -updates before the kernel. Thanks!

Re: [Bug 475354] Re: Hostname not set correctly on UEC cloud due to IP address in local-hostname manifest data

2009-11-10 Thread Scott Moser
I think this might be more of a problem with ec2-init.

Just to be clear on what is happening here:

- eucalyptus is intending to provide an ec2 compatible meta-data service
  (described at
http://docs.amazonwebservices.com/AWSEC2/2009-04-04/DeveloperGuide/ ).
  that includes a field local-hostname.
- on ec2, the value of 'local-hostname' is a fully qualified domain name
that can also be looked up via the provided dns
  (example:ip-10-212-65-188.ec2.internal)
- on eucalyptus, the value of 'local-hostname' is the internal IP address
  (example: 192.168.1.194 or 172.123.1.2).
- ec2-init is utilizing local-hostname to set the hostname. It is doing
so by taking the first token of a dot-delimited string.

The result, is that on eucalyptus, the hostname is set to the decimal
value of the first octet of the ip address (ie 172).

We could work around this in ec2-init, and be smarter about setting
hostname, but the real issue is that the field 'local-hostname' contains
an IP address, not a hostname.

As to reproducible, a stalled installation which appears to have
completed is outside my experience. I changed to the other release in
the archive but found the vendor had changed the software to be
supported, gpsdrive, has changed to sqlite. However, so many bugs have
arisen there as to make further exploration more trouble than it is worth.

I can only suggest the first install of mysql 5.0 from the archive may
fail on a EEE 900A when Postgresql, Mapnik, and Gpsdrive have already
been installed. I was obliged to use a trick to reset the root password
in order to get into mysql if that helps any.

[Bug 480234] [NEW] package mysql-server-5.0 (not installed) failed to install/upgrade: subprocess new pre-installation script returned error exit status 1

2009-11-10 Thread jlukescott
Public bug reported:

Steps I took to get this bug:

- fresh install of 9.10 64-bit workstation

- ran apt-get -y update, apt-get -y upgrade, aptitude -y full-upgrade

- restarted the computer

- mounted some custom bind locations (which all had pre-existing database
website files):
/home/etc/apache2 on /etc/apache2 type none (rw,bind)
/home/etc/mysql on /etc/mysql type none (rw,bind)
/home/etc/php5 on /etc/php5 type none (rw,bind)
/home/usr-local-bin on /usr/local/bin type none (rw,bind)
/home/var-cache-apt-9.10-64bit on /var/cache/apt type none (rw,bind)
/home/var-lib-mysql on /var/lib/mysql type none (rw,bind)
/home/www on /var/www type none (rw,bind)

- ran a bulk installation command:
apt-get -y install keepassx prism-google-mail prism-google-calendar apache2
php5-mysql libapache2-mod-php5 mysql-server-5.0 memcached pdftk php-pear
php-soap php5-gd php5-xmlrpc php5-mcrypt php5-memcache subversion kdesvn meld

- installation appeared to succeed (including asking for the MySQL root
password, which I entered the same as it had been before with 9.04 64-bit)
- the final message I got was:
Errors were encountered while processing:
 /var/cache/apt/archives/mysql-server-5.0_5.1.30really5.0.83-0ubuntu3_amd64.deb
E: Sub-process /usr/bin/dpkg returned an error code (1)

[Bug 480234] Re: package mysql-server-5.0 (not installed) failed to install/upgrade: subprocess new pre-installation script returned error exit status 1

2009-11-10 Thread jlukescott
I just un-mounted the following mount points and successfully installed MySQL:
/home/etc/mysql on /etc/mysql type none (rw,bind)
/home/var-lib-mysql on /var/lib/mysql type none (rw,bind)

... I then looked into the permissions of /home/var-lib-mysql - all the
contents are listed as being owned by 'gdm' and group '123'.
So it looks like the user IDs are mapped differently between 9.04 and 9.10
(possibly due to package installation order?)

I consider this to be a solution, since my initial setup was fairly non-
standard, but it leaves me wondering how an upgrade would have handled
this situation? Or what if a user wants to copy old data files from an
existing partition from 9.04 and use them under 9.10???

Anyway, hope this was helpful.
Luke

Okay, I fixed this in a .2 upload.

Debdiff against the .1 version in karmic-proposed attached for SRU

I verified that avahi-daemon.conf actually lands in the eucalyptus-cc deb, and
gets installed to:

[Bug 466315] Re: bind9 jaunty to karmic upgrade causes initial apparmor audit with openssl.cnf, seems fixed by installing apparmor-profiles but not really

2009-11-10 Thread Jamie Strandboge
Ok, I now know the problem. What is happening is that the AppArmor profile for
9.10 added this line to the profile:
  /etc/ssl/openssl.cnf r,

On upgrade, the package reloads the profile with (see debian/bind9.postinst):
  apparmor_parser -r $APP_PROFILE || true

This was fine up until apparmor in 9.10 added cache files (which was
after this change was made). When you install apparmor-profiles, it
restarts apparmor via the initscript, which regenerates all the cache
files. So apparmor-profiles has nothing to do with it-- it just happened
to trigger regenerating the cache files.

I believe the fix to be to change the postinst script to have:
  apparmor_parser -T -W -r $APP_PROFILE || true

This will force writing of the cache and should fix this. LaMont, can
you handle this in your next upload for Lucid?

Status in “samba” package in Ubuntu: Invalid

 Bug description:
 Binary package hint: samba

I have been tryiong to get my 3 PC's networked, for the past few Ubuntu
releases, with no success. As I have more experience with Ubuntu than most
novice users, this may indicate something that needs substantial attention
for Lucid. I don't expect a Windows Wizard, with an out of the box instant
connection, but there is still way too much CLI as well as educated guessing
in what should be a straightforward process. I know the network works,
because I can get them connected in Windows XP.

I have system-config-samba, winbind and smbfs installed. I have
confirmed my workgroup names are identical, and added the netbios name
to all, also. In Samba Server Configuration the specific folders are all
shared (indicated in Nautilus with share icon on folder) and is Read/Write,
 Visible.

When I go to Places Network, Windows Shares on workgroup I click and
eventually only see one machine - this one.

I have seen DBus error org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.InvalidArgs: Mountpoint
Already registered. occasionally but always get the infamous Unable to
mount location. Failed to retrieve share list from server everytime. Once,
recently I did see one of the machine's names, but when I clicked on it, I
then got the share list error.

All are Karmic (beta) updated machines, but this has been through Jaunty
back to about Dapper for me.

This is the procedure I have used on all 3 machines:

 1. sudo ufw disable

 2. gksu gedit /etc/default/ufw
Find and change to this: IPT_MODULES=nf_conntrack_ftp nf_nat_ftp
 nf_conntrack_irc nf_nat_irc nf_conntrack_netbios_ns

 3. sudo ifconfig | grep Bcast
Look for inet addr: and replace last segment of this IP address with
0/24. In my case it's: 192.xxx.x.0/24. Now do:
sudo ufw allow proto udp to any port 137 from 192.xxx.x.0/24
sudo ufw allow proto udp to any port 138 from 192.xxx.x.0/24
sudo ufw allow proto udp to any port 139 from 192.xxx.x.0/24
sudo ufw allow proto udp to any port 445 from 192.xxx.x.0/24

 4. Enable and confirm: sudo ufw enable | sudo ufw status

 5. Add a user to the Database or change an existing user's password (as
 root) with smbpasswd:
 sudo smbpasswd -a username
 New SMB password: ##
 Retype new SMB password: ##

 6. Confirm with: sudo pdbedit -L

 7. Paste this stanza into smb.conf:
 [global]
 workgroup = WORKGROUP_NAME
 netbios name = NETBIOS_NAME
 server string =
name resolve order = bcast host lmhosts wins
 preferred master = no

 printing = cups
 printcap name = cups
 printcap cache time = 750
 cups options = raw
 load printers = yes
 use client driver = yes
 [printers]
 comment = All Printers
 path = /var/spool/samba
 printable = Yes
 create mask = 0700
 browseable = No
 guest ok = Yes
 [print$]
 comment = Printer Drivers
 path = /var/lib/samba/printers
 browseable = yes
 read only = yes
 guest ok = no

 8. Each share is defined in a separate stanza in smb.conf. - In my case
 it's: path = /home/username/_Shared-X
 [ShareName]
 path = /path_to/shared_directory
 read only = no

 9. Then: sudo chmod 1777 /path_to/shared_directory

 10. Restart Samba: sudo /etc/init.d/samba restart.

Again, this is not even attempting to network alternate OS's , this is
strictly Karmic to Karmic to Karmic.

[Bug 470636] Re: AppArmor security driver does not support backingstore

2009-11-10 Thread Jamie Strandboge
I looked into this quite a bit, and the problem is that libvirt is
unaware of the pristine cow/snapshot that the disk file is referencing.
All that is in the machine definition is the disk entry, which points
only to the snapshot/cow, not the underlying image. I can't (and won't)
fix this because the only way to do that is to make libvirt peek into
the disk file and see what its backing store is. This would allow an
avenue for an attacker to escape the VM, or at least read/overwrite
arbitrary files on the host. If the VM is compromised, the attacker has
write access to the disk file, which could be modified to point to
another file on the disk. Simply put, libvirt should not be looking at
an attacker controlled file for determining access controls.

The support that was added in 0.6.0 that Olivier mentioned is for
'backingstore', which can be used as a part of a volume definition in
a storage pool. This also does not work right now, but I plan to fix it
for Lucid, and possibly do an SRU for Karmic if the changes aren't too
drastic (I'm hoping they won't be).

In the meantime, as a workaround, people can do one of two things:
1. modify /etc/apparmor.d/libvirt-uuid for the additional file. This will
maintain guest isolation (ie, one VM cannot access files of another VM). This
also needs to be done for each VM that uses a cow/snapshot file.
2. modify /etc/apparmor.d/abstractions/libvirt-qemu to allow access to all
files in a particular directory, and put all your backing store files in that
directory. This breaks guest isolation (ie, one VM can read/write to all of the
files in this directory), but it does maintain host protection.

See /usr/share/doc/libvirt-bin/README.Debian.gz for details on the
architecture of the sVirt AppArmor driver and how to customize it for
your environment.

[Bug 403381] Re: jaunty-karmic server upgrade results in two versions of postgresql installed

2009-11-10 Thread merrithewi
That list of instructions leaves out how to get 8.3 to start. On my
just-upgraded karmic, 8.3 won't run any more. (8.4 runs but I can't log
into it, for that matter)

r...@merrithewi-desktop:init.d# pg_ctlcluster 8.3 main start
Error: pg_controldata not found, please install postgresql-8.3

I admit I don't know much about postgresql; I was only using it as
amarok 1.4's backend. I'd like to either upgrade that database from 8.3
to 8.4 or get 8.3 to run. I assumed the upgrade would leave things in a
working state, wrongly as it turned out.

[Bug 348633] Re: Fails to boot from CD after reboot: CDROM boot failure code: 0003

2009-11-10 Thread Dustin Kirkland
Matt, Evan-

From the kvm(1) manpage, I think the option you want is:
  # boot from CD-ROM first, switch back to default order after reboot
  -boot once=d

Can you give that a try and see if that gives you the behavior you
expect?

I tested here with a real, working disk image, and a live ISO.

Using:
 * /usr/bin/kvm -m 512 -cdrom ../iso/karmic-desktop-amd64.iso -hda
karmic-server.img -boot once=d

I booted to the LiveCD desktop first, then used the graphical Restart
option, and rebooted directly to my server.img disk.

[Bug 201786] Re: ssh Agent admitted failure to sign using the key on big endian machines

2009-11-10 Thread demizer
I ran into this same problem in Karmic. Using 'ssh-add ~/.ssh/id_rsa' on
the machine I am trying to connect with fixed the problem.

[Bug 307204] Re: [jaunty] option rfc3442-classless-static-routes causes missing routes

2009-11-10 Thread Roy Sindre Norangshol
I'm not sure if this is related, but I've also have had some issues with
dhclient not fetching the default route from my speedtouch home router.
I went digging a bit and noticed my speedtouch handing out some kind of
Microsoft proprietary classless static routing 249 instead of the
default classless static route 121 from the official RFC. Removing the
rfc3442-classless-static-routes makes the router issue a normal default
route (dhcp option 3). I've made a blog post on it here:
http://www.roysindre.no/a/2009/11/05/dhclient-classless-static-route-
bug/

[Bug 480478] [NEW] libvirt's apparmor profile doesn't allow execution of /usr/lib/libvirt/libvirt_lxc

When starting a LXC container from libvirt, libvirt fails to do so because it's

[Bug 164128] Re: dhclient should accept routing options

2009-11-10 Thread Roy Sindre Norangshol
This bug affects me, as my SpeedTouch home router seems to switch over
to 249 - Classless Static Routes after Ive been into Windows 7 instead
of using the RFC Classless Static Routes 121.

Might also be related to

I also made a blog post about the issue:

[Bug 456806] Re: mountall vomits a shell onto virtual console when you run vi

2009-11-10 Thread Nicholas Campion
I am seeing this issue as well. The final messages I see on my vanilla
server install after boot are:

One or more of the mounts listed in /etc/fstab cannot yet be mounted:
(ESC for recovery shell)
swap: waiting for /dev/mapper/cryptswap1

This is a fully upgraded but completely default (not additional software
selected) install of 9.10 with encrypted user folders.

The reason I wanted to add a comment is that I was experiencing some
other behaviors that might be related. The first thing I tried to do
was to apt-get update / upgrade to see if that fixed the mountall error
and I couldn't sudo because my password got rejected. When I would type
the password and hit enter, the prompt would not respond, so I'd hit
enter again, and it would respond and say the password was incorrect.
It was as if the first enter keystroke was lost.

I tried to ssh into another box to see if that was working and had my
password rejected by the remote system. Again, the password prompt
would act as though my first enter keystroke was lost. And then my
password was rejected on a system I could access from another terminal.

The shell on the system works well as long as I don't hit escape (the
mountall recovery shell problem) and as long as I don't try to enter a
password. I haven't yet determined that they are directly related but
thought this might catch someone's eye.
