[Bug 526222] Re: Problems installing Tomcat

2010-02-23 Thread Thierry Carrez
Looks like the various fixes found on the net nuked your tomcat6-common
package as well.
The tomcat6 is not installed message is emitted when
/usr/share/tomcat6/bin/bootstrap.jar has been removed, and this is a file
installed by tomcat6-common.

Tomcat6 is not packaged as a single package, it's composed of several
packages, including tomcat6-common.

Try:
sudo apt-get purge tomcat6 tomcat6-common tomcat6-admin
sudo apt-get install tomcat6 tomcat6-admin

In all cases, not a bug in tomcat6.

[Bug 514274] Re: NTLMv2 Authentication Not Enabled By Default

2010-02-23 Thread Thierry Carrez
Reading smb.conf manpage, enabling client ntlmv2 auth will disable
NTLMv1, client lanman auth and client plaintext auth authentication. It
also disables share-level authentication.

Servers can be configured to accept NTLMv1 and NTLMv2, or just NTLMv2.
Clients can be configured as well to send NTLMv1 or NTLMv2.

Changing the default will break existing working connections to servers
and clients, and will break share-level authentication (used in XP). The
idea is to follow samba upstream defaults where we can, and here I think
we should.

I had the same error message but found that mysql had actually installed!
When I later rebooted the new version had replaced the old one in memory.

Re: [Bug 231060] Re: packages dnsmasq and libvirt-bin conflict with each other

2010-02-23 Thread Simon Kelley
Thierry Carrez wrote:
@Simon: what are the options from a dnsmasq perspective ?

Some background: dnsmasq can run in two modes.

Default mode: dnsmasq binds the wildcard address and does network magic
to determine which interface request packets actually come from, so that
the results can be send back with the correct source address. This has
the advantage that network interfaces can come and go and change IP
address and dnsmasq will keep working. It's possible to restrict dnsmasq
to only reply to requests on some interfaces; requests from other
interfaces will be read by dnsmasq and then silently dropped. Telling
dnsmasq to use an interface which doesn't exist but might in the future
will result in a logged warning, but dnsmasq will still start and when
the interface comes up it will work.

Bind-interfaces mode: This is the traditional way to do UDP servers. At
startup dnsmasq enumerates all the extant interfaces and then opens a
socket for each one, listening on the interfaces's IP address.
Interfaces may be skipped if excluded by the --interface and
--except-interface flags, and any interface specified in --interface
which doesn't exist at start-up will generate a fatal error.

In almost all cases, default mode is better: --bind-interfaces is only
there to cope with old platforms which don't support enough socket
options to do default mode.

The only time when --bind-interfaces works better is when it's desirable
to run more than one instance of dnsmasq. This is not possible in
default mode, but it does work in bind-interfaces mode, providing than
_all_ instances are in bind-interfaces mode, and that they listen on a
disjoint set of interfaces. This is what the libvirt package attempts to
do, as I understand it: it starts its own dnsmasq in --bind-interfaces
mode listening on a virtual interface and it forces any system dnsmasq
into --bind-interfaces mode and away from the the virtual interface by
dropping a configuration fragment into /etc/dnsmasq.d

This method brings the disadvantages of --bind-interfaces to the private
libvirt dnsmasq instance (the race condition at start-up) and to the
system dnsmasq (which will no longer cope with changes to network
interfaces.)

Options.

1) Keep doing what you're doing, work around the race condition and
accept that installing libvirt will limit the functionality of a system
dnsmasq by forcing it into --bind-interfaces mode.

2) Arrange that if libvirt and a system dnsmasq co-exist, libvirt uses
the system dnsmasq, rather than starting its own. It should be possible
to drop some configuration to make the system dnsmasq do what is needed
for libvirt. There's a problem here if libvirt is installed alone and
using a private dnsmasq, and then subsequently a system dnsmasq is
installed.

3) Make some changes to dnsmasq to improve the situation when two
instances are running. This may be possible, but I don't have many clues
what could be done.

4) Look at some sort of partitioning in the kernel so that the virtual
interface is in some sort of separate partition with effectively two
network stacks. A sort of chroot for networking. I don't know if this
exists in the Linux container stuff, or could be done. It's not really
my area.

HTH

Simon.

[Bug 231060] Re: packages dnsmasq and libvirt-bin conflict with each other

2010-02-23 Thread Emmet Hikory
@Simon, Thanks for the guidance. Of the options:

1) This seems least invasive in the short-term

2) There's a few potential issues here.

a) Install order, because defaults need to be adjusted, and services may
need to restart. Some of this can be handled by triggers, but it
requires cooperation (perhaps having some way that dnsmasq-base requires
users to drop some file that dns-base can use to restart all users when
new ones are installed, or similar awkwardnesses).

b) Removal independence: similar to install issues, the packages need to
be able to coordinate uninstallation.

c) This interferes with use cases where a user wants to use dnsmasq to
provide nameservice inside libvirt and to do dhcp/tftp on a local
network simultaneously or similar cases: using a single demon makes
having multiple configurations difficult.

3) The big item that struck me looking at this was that dnsmasq exits if
unable to bind to every interface in wildcard mode: having this instead
check error conditoins from bind failures and either internally drop the
interface/address from the list of interfaces on which to listen or poll
on the interface being available depending on the nature of the bind
failue would significantly ease the difficulties of running multiple
instances, especially one wildcard instance and one or more bound
instances. It also eases the race condition identified in comment #11.

Another option would be to extend the D-Bus interface to permit D-Bus to
be used to remove addresses or interfaces from the wildcard set to
reserve them for use by a non-wildcard dnsmasq, preferably in
combination with a D-Bus query on startup to automatically enter non-
wildcard mode if there is already a wildcard server active and
specifically exclude any addresses or interfaces already claimed by
another instance.

This seems a lot of longer-term work though.

4) sounds kinda cool, but needing a lot more investigation and code than
any of the other options.

So, my plan is as follows:

1) Add a dpkg trigger subscription to dnsmasq that calls the initscript
with force-reload if new configuration snippets are installed

2) Add a configuration snipped to libvirt that switches to bind-
interface by default, and excludes virbr0

This compeltely ignores the race condition between startng virbr0 adn
starting dnsmasq, and it doesn't help for any sort of complex configuration (of
either libvirt or dnsmasq), but it seems the least impact path to enable
simultaneous operation without crippling either tool or needing extensive
coding.

[Bug 526386] [NEW] dnsmasq exits using --interface if the interface does not exist yet

2010-02-23 Thread Emmet Hikory
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: dnsmasq

When dnsmasq is used with the --interface argument, and the selected
interface is not yet available dnsmasq exits immediately. This prevents
some use cases, including:

1) managed virtual environments bringing up virbr0 interfaces (libvirt
has commented code disabling this to avoid this premature exit)

2) Use with usb0 networks for hotplug of portable devices for ad-hoc
network access

3) Use with usb networking adaptors to provide occasional ad-hoc
networks on demand

This is more important when one is using the DHCP or TFTP features
of dnsmasq, as in those cases one may wish to specifcally bind ony to
some known interface considered safe for these services (virbr0 and usb0
being networks that are rarely used to reach gateways by systems that
would run dnsmasq as a system service).

[Bug 526386] Re: dnsmasq exits using --interface if the interface does not exist yet

2010-02-23 Thread Emmet Hikory
From a brief look at the code, it appears that the relevant section is
in src/dnsmasq.c : 169-189. In this mode, if unable to access an
interface because it doesn't exist, dnsmasq should poll the interface
for a configurable timeout to see if it becomes available before
quitting. As there may be multiple interfaces, implementing this as a
push-to-back-of-queue delay until there is only one interface polling
will ensure that the majority of intentionally specified interfaces come
up as quickly as if all interfaces existed.

sometimes it fails miserably and continually. I'm not sure how to
reproduce the issue everytime but it does happen every single day.
Looking for some help.

[This covers 231060 too, they're basically the same problem.]

Such code would be possible, but shouldn't be necessary. Going back to
the original bug report, there are two problems, the first is the
race-condition in libvirt, which could be fixed (I assume) by a delay
between the synchronous creation of the virtual interface and the
starting of dnsmasq.

The second problem is, paraphrasing, we have problems with network
interfaces which are created ad-hoc, come and go, and change IP address
over time. It's for precisely this use case that I carefully coded the
standard (ie not --bind-interfaces) network mode in dnsmasq, many years
ago. Without bind-interfaces, dnsmasq works exactly as you wish in these
circumstances. Many people have been using it with ad-hoc interfaces and
don't have any problems. This is a non-problem, _except_ that lib-virt
insists on running a private instance of dnsmasq, and therefore needs
the --bind-interfaces command.

Adding polling hackery to get something like the sane behaviour which is
available _by_default_ does seem like a bad idea, if there are other
alternatives.

Can we try and enumerate exactly what services libvirt wants from
dnsmasq on the virtual network? I think it should be possible to express
that as some configuration fragments that libvirt can drop into
/etc/dnsmasq.d and have a high confidence of not affecting any other
existing configuration on a system dnsmasq, or accidentally providing
services to non-virtual networks unless they are explicitly configured.
That way, libvirt can start up a dnsmasq instance a system dnsmasq is
not running, but defer to the system dnsmasq if it is.

The trick here would be for libvirt to start dnsmasq as

if system dnsmasq is not installed or enabled
 dnsmasq --interface=virt0 --bind-interfaces
else
 /etc/init.d/dnsmasq restart

That would inhibit the usual dnsmasq behaviour of offering service on
every interface unless configured otherwise. The --bind-interfaces means
that it will work even if the system is running eg BIND on port 53 of
other interfaces. By putting these on the command line, they won't be
seen when a system dnsmasq is installed.

The rest of the configuration could be dropped in /etc/dnsmasq.d and
suitably tagged so that it only applied to requests from virt0 (or
whatever it's called). That way they will be picked up by a system
dnsmasq and suitable service supplied to the virtual network by a system
dnsmasq.

Note the pid-file of the libvirt dnsmasq should be the same as a system
one, so that installing a system dnsmasq will stop the libvirt dnsmasq
before starting the system one. For removing dnsmasq on a system which
has libvirt installed, some code in post-rm of the dnsmasq package can
poke libvirt to restart its private instance.

The only problem I can see with this so far goes like this.

Consider a system dnsmasq install, that just does the default, ie it
provides a DNS service, but no DHCP service. Now install libvirt, which
configures DHCP for virt0 with

dhcp-range=stuff

That actually enables DHCP on every interface (no command-line
--interface flag, here, it's a system instance.) DHCP requests on other
interfaces will fail, because there won't be a suitable dhcp-range, but
there will be log messages to that effect, and general unpleasantness,
there's also the remote possibility that the libvirt address range could
overlap with a real interface and then DHCP service would be provided on
a real interface.

To fix this, lets add to dhcp-range

dhcp-range=interface:virt0,stuff

The semantics of this is to _only_ provide and DHCP service on virt0
_unless_ there's another dhcp-range line without an
interface;interface part, when the original sematics rule.

How does that sound?

Simon.

Re: [Bug 526386] Re: dnsmasq exits using --interface if the interface does not exist yet

2010-02-23 Thread Simon Kelley
Something else that's required: we need to stop a libvirt-started
dnsmasq from picking up configuration left around by a removed system
dnsmasq, so the start-dnsmasq pseudo-code in libvirt becomes.

echo dhcp-range=interface:virt0,ip range /etc/dnsmasq.d/libvirtf

if system dnsmasq is not installed or enabled
  dnsmasq --interface=virt0\
--bind-interfaces --conf-file=/etc/dnsmasq.d/libvirt
else
  /etc/init.d/dnsmasq restart

[Bug 519513] Re: UEC upgrade from 9.10 karmic to Lucid fails

2010-02-23 Thread ariel
Hi, a comment to Boris' comment #2 first:

 Version info (after upgrade)
 ii eucalyptus-cc 1.6~bzr931-0ubuntu7.4
 ii eucalyptus-cloud 1.6~bzr931-0ubuntu7.4
 ii eucalyptus-common 1.6~bzr931-0ubuntu7.4
 ii eucalyptus-gl 1.6.2~bzr1180-0ubuntu1

you still have some of the older Karmic packages around, the Lucid ones are the
1.6.2.
I don't know about the 'do-release-upgrade -d' method, but you should at
least perform an
   apt-get dist-upgrade
to allow apt to upgrade the existing packages even if that implies bigger
(dependency) changes.
Check the resulting versions, all the eucalyptus-* packages should be at
version 1.6.2-0ubuntu3
(as of today) after the upgrade.

[Bug 521085] Re: Samba 3.4.0 denies access to Roaming Profiles for XP Clients

2010-02-23 Thread Patrick Goetz
I don't know if it's worth backporting 3.4.5 to Karmic. In researching
this problem and talking to a number of windows sys admins it seems that
most samba server users have just given up on roaming profiles because
they can't get them to work. It doesn't help that the XP Group Policy
settings (managed using gpedit.msc) don't seem to work as advertised, at
least not by my testing. Add to that the agony of ironing out a problem
when local profile caching is turned on (i.e. the 3-reboot minimum).

Unfortunately, in an office with XP clients where people move around
there's not much alternative. Well, save for re-installing all the
desktops with linux and running Windows apps using Virtualbox. :)

[Bug 519513] Re: UEC upgrade from 9.10 karmic to Lucid fails

2010-02-23 Thread ariel
Second comment :-) I am trying to achieve the same (ie, have Eucalyptus
1.6.2) but without doing a full upgrade to Lucid, just upgrading the
required packages, in a NC for now.

This combination still doesn't work for me (investigating further) but after i
did update eucalyptus-nc with
apt-get install eucalyptus-nc -t lucid
I had to:

apt-get install librampart0 -t lucid
(the eucalyptus-common dependency in librampart0 is an unversioned one, but
Eucalyptus NC fails to start with the Karmic one... complains that the lib was
not found tiny issue to file a separate bugreport) At this point the Cloud
Controller does see the updated node and can submit instance-requests... but
they fail.

Now I've updated kvm and the kernel,
apt-get install qemu-kvm -t lucid
apt-get install linux-server -t lucid
trying to get kvm running again, but i still fails,
warning: could not configure /dev/net/tun: no virtual network emulation

I guess now qemu drops the CAP_NET_ADMIN capability before starting??
How can i change or solve that?

Thanks!

smbclient fails.

There is also an interesting feature where the columns of the directory

the problem may be in unicode normalisation. There are two ways of
representing ā in Unicode, a single character and an 'a' followed by a
compose character. Every sane person uses the single character, but alas
one of the standards in use in my organisation (MARC) uses the compose
character.

[Bug 246558] Re: ssh's init script should generate host keys if they're missing

2010-02-23 Thread Soren Hansen
How about if I key off whether GSSAPIKeyExchange is set?

E.g. extend host_keys_required like so:

hostkeys=$(get_config_option HostKey)
if [ $hostkeys ]; then
echo $hostkeys
else
if [ $(get_config_option GSSAPIKeyExchange) != yes ]
then
# No HostKey directives at all, so the server picks some
# defaults depending on the setting of Protocol.
[...]
fi
fi

So, if the user has HostKeys set, those will be generated if they do not
exist. If no HostKeys are set, and GSSAPIKeyExchange is set, we don't
generate keys the user does not want. Will that make everyone happy?

[Bug 526386] Re: dnsmasq exits using --interface if the interface does not exist yet

2010-02-23 Thread Emmet Hikory
Actually, I filed this bug more as a result of the comments in the
libvirt code, which indicate that at least one user of dnsmasq found it
unable to accomplish an operation that seemed to make sense based on the
documentation with a particular corner-case configuration.

I consider it wishlist at best, and perhaps won'tfix. Addressing
this is completely unnecessary to either allow libvirt and dnsmasq to
interoperate or to permit users to use ad-hoc interfaces. It's also not
necessarily the best way to address the case where someone wants to do
both things at once (there being several other ways to do that well).
It only exists to document either a decision that dnsmasq specifically
doesn't support using --interface and --bind-interface in combination
with an ad-hoc interface *or* that when used in this combination there
is a potential for a race condition.

Although this issue was initially raised in bug #231060, it's
irrelevant to my current plan to address that bug, but since I won't be
addressing this race condition in the resolution of that bug, I wanted
to separate this out.

[Bug 207791] Re: winbind forgets uid/name gid/name mappings in regulary periods

2010-02-23 Thread Torsten Krah
   1. Check your idmap backend setup in /etc/samba/smb.conf

Checked - ok here.

   2. Check /var/log/samba/log.winbind* for relevant errors/warnings

No errors or warnings.

   3. If using rid or ads as the backend, try to find out if you can
still query the domain controller with wbinfo -u and wbinfo -g. You may
need to check klist, net ads status, net ads info to see if your
kerberos key didn't get renewed. Some of this should be run under sudo
with an Active Directory (AD) authenticated user.

Yes i can query - and after issuing wbinfo -u or wbinfo -g or getent my
name, uid mappings are known again. But thats the problem - those
infos should not be lost (see original report above) - my ticket was
still valid 9 hours.

   4. Try re-logging in with an AD user and see if the problem is fixed.
If so, it might be that a new key was issued.

Yeah of cause relogin does fix - but it will happen again after a short
time - that won't fix the issue reported.
