[Bug 584862] [NEW] libvirt launches dnsmasq for non-dhcp networks.
Public bug reported: When defining a network in libvirt that does not have a dhcp section, dnsmasq is still started for the that network. This prevents you from starting your own version, or binding other software to that interface that does the same thing. For example. network namenet1/name forward dev='eth0' mode='route'/ bridge name='virbr1' stp='off' forwardDelay='0' / ip address='10.0.0.1' netmask='255.0.0.0' /ip /network When you run 'virsh net-create net1.xml' you get: nobody1343 1 0 09:59 ?00:00:00 dnsmasq --strict-order --bind-interfaces --pid-file=/var/run/libvirt/network/net1.pid --conf- file= --listen-address 10.0.0.1 --except-interface lo (NB. This doesn't happen on a CentOS 5.4 server running the standard libvirtd v0.6.3). I have also encountered what seems to be data corruption with a karmic i386 kvm host after rebooting (actually I stopped the guest, rebooted the host and now I can't start the guest again). I get a kernel panic because of a bad ELF header. The guest is also karmic i386. It has worked fine for a while, I have done maybe 10 reboots earlier with this guest. [Bug 571093] Re: multipath + libvirtd eats away more memory over time
I've had another look at this bug, reproducing etc, this time through GDB, with the output from valgrind the debug output in my last two posts, here is what I believe is happening: 1. multipath -v4 gets called (or other appropriate trigger) - multipath detects a device that it believes is new, which triggers a udev add/change event 2. libvirt picks up on the events and runs the code within udevAddOneDevice(device) 3. While running around it seems that one of the if functions around node_device_udev.c:1230 returns non zero and hits the 'goto out' call. 4. As a result virNodeDeviceDefFree(def); does not get called and libvirt still thinks that the device exists. 5. When multipath realizes itself that the device isn't worth anything it triggers a udev remove call. 6. libvirt tries to remove the device but fails early on because it doesn't know what udev is talking about, and again doesn't free memory. For what it's worth, just before the goto out call was made gdb was about to tell me the following: (gdb) p def $4 = (virNodeDeviceDefPtr) 0x1cabd70 (gdb) x/t def 0x1cabd70: (gdb) x/3x def 0x1cabd70: 0x 0x 0x (gdb) x/s def 0x1cabd70: I've got a distinct feeling that if virNodeDeviceDefFree(def) was called before the function returned, this memory leak wouldn't have happened. [Bug 571093] Re: multipath + libvirtd eats away more memory over time
Okay, I've created a patch that should fix the issue in two ways, first as observed in my previous comment I suspected that adding a virNodeDeviceDefFree(def) to udevAddOneDevice() would solve the issue, it for the most part did but still left approximately an 8k RES memory leak. Looking at the valgrind data that I had managed to generate (Comment #13) I suspected a second leak and noticed that udevProcessDeviceListEntry() after running udevAddOneDevice() ran udev_device_unref(device); which according to the udev code does: * Drop a reference of a udev device. If the refcount reaches zero, * the resources of the device will be released. Based on the fact that the reference is wiped at the end of udevProcessDeviceListEntry() I have added it to udevEventHandleCallback() which is the other main location of udevAddOneDevice() getting called. This is now resulting in no increase in RES memory (except for natural increases). Patch is attached. ** Patch added: Rough patch that appears to fix the two main causes. http://launchpadlibrarian.net/49024396/9024-free-memory-for-invalid-devices.patch -- multipath + libvirtd eats away more memory over time https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/571093 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Server Team, which is subscribed to libvirt in ubuntu. -- Ubuntu-server-bugs mailing list Ubuntu-server-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com Modify settings or unsubscribe at: https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-server-bugs

[Bug 584484] Re: chkrootkit incorrectly identifies bindshell if mailserver runs tls
Thank you for opening this bug and helping make Ubuntu better. This is an expected (potential) false-positive. From /usr/share/doc/chkrootkit/README.FALSE-POSITIVES: (...) bindshell listens on a lot of ports. these ports are also used by other legitimate programs. chkrootkit's detection algorithm cannot determine the difference between a legitimate program and bindshell. [Bug 571093] Re: [SRU] multipath + libvirtd eats away more memory over time
** Description changed: libvirtd fills the memory, until the libvirtd process gets killed. This happens over a long time. - This server (info by ubuntu-bug) has 4GB of memory and an uptime of 27 days. Some KVM machines have been active during that period. The last 4 days before the crash, no virtual machine was running on the server, but libvirtd slowly filled memory. - Another server has 32 GB of memory and active virtual machines. It took a few weeks more until memory was completely filled. Steps to reproduce: - Start libvirtd - Wait a long time ProblemType: Bug Architecture: amd64 Date: Wed Apr 28 08:43:52 2010 DistroRelease: Ubuntu 9.10 Package: libvirt-bin 0.7.0-1ubuntu13.1 ProcEnviron: - LANG=C - SHELL=/bin/bash + LANG=C + SHELL=/bin/bash ProcVersionSignature: Ubuntu 2.6.31-20.58-server SourcePackage: libvirt Uname: Linux 2.6.31-20-server x86_64 + + == + SRU: + * IMPACT: If affected, libvirtd will eventually leak all memory, and OOM the system. + * ADDRESSED: Applied patch solves two memory leaks by freeing memory on function exit conditions. + * PATCH: As attached from Nigel Jones below. He has also submitted this upstream as well. + * TEST CASE: In some cases, you can reproduce this issue by running top -p $(pidof libvirtd) in one window, watching RES memory usage increase, while running while true; do sudo multipath -F; sudo multipath -v4; done in another window. Due to a race condition (see Bug: #585027), this will sometimes not reproduce the issue by itself. In these cases, you can simulate the race condition by sudo dmsetup remove string, and then running the commands above. + * REGRESSION POTENTIAL: Patch is pretty simple, clean. Regression potential should be minimal. + == ** Changed in: libvirt (Ubuntu) Status: In Progress = Fix Committed ** Changed in: libvirt (Ubuntu Lucid) Status: In Progress = Fix Committed -- [SRU] multipath + libvirtd eats away more memory over time https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/571093 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Server Team, which is subscribed to libvirt in ubuntu. -- Ubuntu-server-bugs mailing list Ubuntu-server-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com Modify settings or unsubscribe at: https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-server-bugs

[Bug 452219] Re: SMB Browser Printer Queues Not In Alphabetical Order
Thank you for bringing this bug to our attention. However, a paper cut should be a small usability issue, in the default Ubuntu 10.04 install , that affects many people and is quick and easy to fix. So this bug can't be addressed as part of the project. The Samba Browser is not included in the default installation and most users don't install it, so this is not a paper cut. For further info about papercuts criteria, please read https://wiki.ubuntu.com/PaperCut. Don't worry though, This bug has been marked as invalid ONLY in the papercuts project. ** Changed in: hundredpapercuts Status: New = Invalid ** Package changed: ubuntu = samba (Ubuntu) -- SMB Browser Printer Queues Not In Alphabetical Order https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/452219 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Server Team, which is subscribed to samba in ubuntu. -- Ubuntu-server-bugs mailing list Ubuntu-server-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com Modify settings or unsubscribe at: https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-server-bugs

This means that now Lucid uses $zone$ syntax, while karmic was fine with %zone% (at least, with dlz-mysql) Also, http://bind-dlz.sourceforge.net/mysql_driver.html still reports %% as the correct way to write the config file. I cannot find any reference anywhere of this syntax change, it took me a few hours to understand what was wrong. Proper documentation should be included in the ubuntu package. [Bug 585108] [NEW] Problems with node registration
Public bug reported: Using ubuntu 10.04, i have eucalyptus-nc running in the node controller but does not have nc.log. In the cc, if i run euca_conf --discover-nodes it find no nodes. Even if i run euca_conf --register-nodes NODE_IP, i receive a success message (done), but no nodes are showed with euca_conf --list-nodes. euca-describe-availability-zones verbose returns 0/0 for all types. My hw configuration are with 2 machines, 1 clc, cc, sc and 1 nc. I've deregistered everything, cluster through web interface and node through command line, then rebooted clc/cc/sc and the nc. After reboot, the cluster was automatically registered, i changed the eucalytptus- cc.conf and the eucalyptus-sc.conf to c3cluster1 again. But euca_conf --list-nodes show no nodes. Even after --register-nodes 192.168.1.2 getting success message. Im sad because with ubuntu 9.10 everything was working and now with 10.04 it does not work for some unknow reason. I have the clc/cc and the nc linked through a hub. The clc/cc have 2 NIC's, 1 public(10.1.2.x) and 1 private(192.168.1.X) that is used to comunicate with the node. In the hub i have a dhcp server that assigns IP's in the 10.1.2.X subnet, and it is the gw too. The network configuration in the NC is manual(192.168.1.2), in the private iface of CLC/CC is manual too(192.168.1.1) and the public iface is dhcp. [Bug 582812] Re: ldapsearch -y option does not work
Thank you for reporting this bug and making Ubuntu better. Did you create the /etc/ldap.secrets file using a text editor such as Vim or nano? If so the editor probably added a CR or LF to the end of the line. If there is such characters the ldap utilities won't recognize the string as a legit password. Can you try creating /etc/ldap.secrets using: sudo sh -c echo -n 'secret' /etc/ldap.secrets Replacing 'secret' with your correct password. Then retry your ldapsearch commands. [Bug 585053] [NEW] no user interface to configure whether time synchronisation is always made on establishing the network connection.
You have been subscribed to a public bug: Binary package hint: gnome-system-tools $ lsb_release -rd Description:Ubuntu 10.04 LTS Release:10.04 $ uname -a Linux U-001 2.6.32-22-generic #33-Ubuntu SMP Wed Apr 28 13:28:05 UTC 2010 x86_64 GNU/Linux $ apt-cache policy gnome-system-tools gnome-system-tools: Installed: 2.30.0-0ubuntu2 Candidate: 2.30.0-0ubuntu2 It would be logical to expect, that when the time setting is set to Manual in the time-admin, then time is really set manually, and there is no synchronisation over the network However even then there are lines like this in the system log: ntpdate[1364]: adjust time server 91.189.94.4 offset 0.099757 sec It is like that even after the clean install, when this setting was on manual and clicking caused the message about the need to install NTP support to pop out. Interesting... ntp is not installed, but something is still trying to adjust the time with the server, on this IP, which happens to be ntp.ubuntu.com. Even more interesting was to observe, that after installing the NTP support and changing the time-admin setting to Keep synchronised with internet servers and even after the selecting totally different servers, there is still this same line on the system log every time after establishing the network connection. Of course then I discovered that this is doings of ntpdate, which is installed by default as dependancy of ubuntu-minimal and has this same ntp.ubuntu.com in its configuration - and there is no way to see or change it from the user interface. Other solution could be of course dropping the dependancy in a way, that ntpdate would not be installed by default on standard desktop installation, but I am not sure, if this could brake something else and would therefore be impossible. The server(s) defined in /etc/default/ntpdate are not visible from the user interface and there no way to configure them. I really do not want to describe it as calling home (as the setting with ntp.ubuntu.com has no connection to user interface), but there is possibility, that someone else would. In some places it could be even seen as security risk, when the system is connecting somewhere without any according configuration or the way to configure this... ** Affects: ntp (Ubuntu) Importance: Low Status: Triaged ** Tags: ntp ntpdate time-admin -- no user interface to configure whether time synchronisation is always made on establishing the network connection. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/585053 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Server Team, which is subscribed to ntp in ubuntu. -- Ubuntu-server-bugs mailing list Ubuntu-server-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com Modify settings or unsubscribe at: https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-server-bugs
[Bug 585053] Re: no user interface to configure whether time synchronisation is always made on establishing the network connection.
But that's not a problem with time-admin, which is not supposed to control ntpdate at all. It's just that ntpdate shouldn't run by ifup when interfaces are enabled. Else, there's no point in optionally installing the ntp daemon. I suspect ntpdate is not run when your connections are managed using NetworkManager instead of ifup, which could explain why this bug has gone unnoticed. If it's the case, that would be a workaround, anyway NetworkManager is the preferred way to handle connections on desktops now. I don't think disabling ntpdate by default would hurt, no application should rely on it. From https://help.ubuntu.com/10.04/serverguide/C/NTP.html: Ubuntu comes with ntpdate as standard, and will run it once at boot time to set up your time according to Ubuntu's NTP server. So it may well be that server settings are used on desktops, where it doesn't really make sense, since we get an inconsistent behavior with the GUI. ** Package changed: gnome-system-tools (Ubuntu) = ntp (Ubuntu) ** Changed in: ntp (Ubuntu) Status: Incomplete = Triaged ** Summary changed: - no user interface to configure whether time synchronisation is always made on establishing the network connection. + ntpdate shouldn't be run by ifup on desktops (conflict with time-admin's NTP options) -- ntpdate shouldn't be run by ifup on desktops (conflict with time-admin's NTP options) https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/585053 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Server Team, which is subscribed to ntp in ubuntu. -- Ubuntu-server-bugs mailing list Ubuntu-server-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com Modify settings or unsubscribe at: https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-server-bugs

[Bug 322518] Re: No obvious way to prevent ntpdate to be run when interface are brought up
I'd argue ntpdate shouldn't be started at all by default. I can see no reason why people would prefer using ntpdate rather than ntpd. Desktops should ship without NTP enabled (i.e. ntp package not installed, but installable via time-admin), and server should ship with it installed. Current situation conflicts with time-admin's options, and is not really optimal for servers either (time should be updated smoothly via ntpd). ** Changed in: ntp (Ubuntu) Importance: Wishlist = Low -- No obvious way to prevent ntpdate to be run when interface are brought up https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/322518 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Server Team, which is subscribed to ntp in ubuntu. -- Ubuntu-server-bugs mailing list Ubuntu-server-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com Modify settings or unsubscribe at: https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-server-bugs

*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 322518 *** https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/322518 I should note here, that this all happens, when connection is managed using NetworkManager - as if in clean unaltered install. I put this bug initially under gnome-system-tools, because the situation is kind of misleading from the point of ordinary user - synchronisation takes place even when the user has not changed the setting from Manual to Keep synchronised. [Bug 585208] [NEW] slapd becomes non-responsive after several weeks runtime
Public bug reported: I use an Ubuntu 10.04 (lucid) server for, among other things, LDAP authentication. slapd: Installed: 2.4.21-0ubuntu5 Candidate: 2.4.21-0ubuntu5 Version table: *** 2.4.21-0ubuntu5 0 500 http://ftp.iinet.net.au/pub/ubuntu/ lucid/main Packages 500 http://au.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ lucid/main Packages 100 /var/lib/dpkg/status Distributor ID: Ubuntu Description:Ubuntu 10.04 LTS Release:10.04 Codename: lucid With Ubuntu 9.10 it was stable and well-behaved. Since upgrading to 10.04, however, I've been seeing issues where slapd stops responding to ldap queries after several weeks of uptime. slapd has to be killed and re-launched to get it working again. I haven't found any way to reproduce this except waiting. The delay before it happens is variable, from a few days to a few weeks. All other daemons on the server are stable and well behaved. The issue appears to be restricted to slapd. After the second time this happened, I tried to dump a core from slapd so I could debug it after I'd restarted it to restore services. However, gcore reported the following error: /root/slapd.core.gMMj3g:1: Error in sourced command file: Cannot access memory at address 0x1fe8513 gcore: failed to create slapd.core.25525 and when I attached gdb directly to attempt to just get a backtrace, it failed in a similar manner: Attaching to process 25525 Reading symbols from /usr/sbin/slapd...Reading symbols from /usr/lib/debug/usr/sbin/slapd...done. done. Cannot access memory at address 0x1fe8513 ... making it rather hard to collect debug information. A backtrace requested after that error is essentially useless, as it contains no symbols, only '???' and addresses. This time when it happened I collected some information from slapd's /proc entry before re-starting the process. It's all I could come up with, and it didn't tell me much. I'll attach the files from /proc here. Ideas? Can this be caused by a slapd bug? () Basically, it appears that qemudDomainAttachDevice calls virCgroupDenyDevicePath using a NULL pointer, the attached patch will not call cgroup if the pointer is NULL. I'm not sure if this requires any more tidying up. ** Patch added: Patch to not run virCgroupDenyDevicePath if cgroup pointer is NULL http://launchpadlibrarian.net/49053293/9025-do-not-deny-cgroup-if-null.patch -- segfault when attaching disk with same physical device https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/455832 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Server Team, which is subscribed to libvirt in ubuntu. -- Ubuntu-server-bugs mailing list Ubuntu-server-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com Modify settings or unsubscribe at: https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-server-bugs
[Bug 455832] Re: segfault when attaching disk with same physical device
Also, I forgot to mention in my previous comment, I'm yet to determine if this also affects the current release of libvirt. -- segfault when attaching disk with same physical device https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/455832 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Server Team, which is subscribed to libvirt in ubuntu. -- Ubuntu-server-bugs mailing list Ubuntu-server-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com Modify settings or unsubscribe at: https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-server-bugs
