Why should the LTS follow with non-latest stable tomcat? With the
release of ga tomcat 7 it's safe to assume that tomcat6 has reached
maintenance-only mode.

The changelog from 6.0.28 to 6.0.32 is big, but changes are not
breaking; some more enableable features, mostly conformance fixes or
bugfixes preventing memory leaks.

To keep looking forward to year 2015 (https://wiki.ubuntu.com/LTS) and
the java server applications; it might be good to expect that especially
open source products will keep working with the tomcat6, specifically
the latest stable, not an almost stable version.

If the latest-maintenance-mode stable strategy is unacceptable, then
providing the latest stable in backports should be?

I do not think that maintaining a backport-branch starting from 6.0.24
should be considered at all.

major issues or security vulnerabilities with a minimal patch to reduce
the risk of regression on running machines, and QA the minimal change
extensively. A known issue is better than an unknown regression :

Hmm ok; understood and agreed; so a bug like this should be filed for
any known issues in the future and a backport request for others.

My point came from the fact that tomcat6 is widely used as is and
embedded in commericial products as well, but I'm not arguing any more
as the StableReleaseUpdates lines the clear rules.

Problem: res_search() can return -1 with h_errno == HOST_NOT_FOUND

I've attached a test program, show-resolv.c, to demonstrate the problem.

To compile: gcc -ggdb3 -O -std=gnu99 -pedantic -Wall -o show-resolv
show-resolv.c -lresolv

To run: strace -e recv,send,recvfrom,sendto ./show-resolv

You will see that no DNS packets are sent to the nameserver configured
in /etc/resolv.conf.

Actual output (no send/recv stuff!):

$ strace -e recv,send,recvfrom,sendto ./show-resolv

res search result: -1, h_errno: 1 (Unknown host)

Expected output:

Of course the recvfrom details may differ with /etc/resolv.conf configuration.
And instead of 43, any positive number that makes it plausible we've received a 
successful reply to a DNS query for localhost IN A is valid, should there be 
gratuitious other records returned from the name server.

Please fix the resolver so that it actually sends a query for bare
hostnames (without any dots, inner or trailing), localhost is a valid
TLD.

Dan suggested I change the vga to cirrus and restart. That worked.

worrisome because it is a dependency of lsb-base, which itself is
'required', meaning you absolutely should have it.

common?

dmesg has no more apparmor errors, so it is not likely the cause of the
permission denial.  But libvirt is supposed to change the ownership of
the usb device so that libvirt can access it.  So I'm not sure what is
causing this.

Could you append your /etc/libvirt/qemu.conf file, and
/var/log/libvirt/qemu/VM.log where VM is the name of the libvirt vm and
the result of 'ls -l /dev/bus/usb/001/004'.

I've tried again to reproduce this to no avail.

Do you get different behavior if you do

   qemu-img convert -f raw -O raw /dev/yourvg/yourlv lv1.raw

and if you do

   dd if=/dev/yourvg/yourlv of=lv2.raw

?

If not, then the compression if you're using it, or simply memory
pressure appears to be the cause, so beside ionice you may want to try
to simply use 'nice'

Also, please let us know if using a cgroup works for you (and, if not,
please provide all the settings you used).

Thanks for taking the time to report this bug.  Does /etc/gshadow.lock
exist?  If so, does renaming/removing the *.lock file resolve the issue?
This is probably similar to bug #432964. Its possible another process
that created the lock aborted abnormally before cleaning up after
itself.

The lock file did exist.
I ran

cp /etc/gshadow ~/
rm /etc/gshadow*
apt-get install -f

This fixed the problem

Fascinating.  The getrlimit kernel code should never return -EPERM, nor
lead to any selinux or apparmor calls fwiw.  I'd be curious to see an
strace of local.  If in fact a call to the kernel/sys.c:getrlimit() is
returning -EPERM, then the arguments passed to do_prlimit are being
corrupted along the way.

More likely would seem to be a problem with glibc.  We could try an
instrumented kernel to find out more.

Is this 32- or 64-bit?

Did you attempt to update the system from a terminal?  It appears
another program was updating the system while you were also doing so.
Please make sure synaptic isn't running on a desktop, and try the
upgrade again.
