[Bug 681774] Re: nova_sudoers is brittle, should use proper rootwrap

2011-06-10 Thread Thierry Carrez
There are, in fact, three issues.

1/ The current sudoers file is way too permissive. It gives access to so
many unrestricted commands that the nova user is as powerful as the root
user.

2/ The sudoers setup is a bit brittle because it assumes things about
your /etc/sudoers (must include /etc/sudoers.d).

3/ Whenever a code change in nova introduces the need for a new sudo
command, the packages fail to introduce in parallel the needed change in
the sudoers file, mainly because those are two separate code bases with
two separate sets of developers working on it.

Options include:
* Strengthening the nova_sudoers file (precisely limiting options for every
command) would address (1)
* Shipping the nova_sudoers in Nova code, or generating it automatically at
package-build time, would address (3)
* Writing a specific command wrapper in Nova would address (1) and (3), but
suffers of a bit NIH

Not sure what's the best way to care about (2), or if we should just
assume a sane sudoers.d support.

Another layer would be to ship apparmor profiles in Ubuntu packaging,
though we would encounter issue (3) again.

** Summary changed:

- nova_sudoers is brittle, should use proper rootwrap
+ nova_sudoers is brittle, often out of date, and too permissive

** Description changed:

- Using /etc/sudoers.d/nova_sudoers is a bit brittle. For example, it
- makes nova utterly fail if your /etc/sudoers is missing #includedir
- /etc/sudoers.d.
+ 1/ The current sudoers file is way too permissive. It gives access to so
+ many unrestricted commands that the nova user is as powerful as the root
+ user.

- It could be replaced by a proper root wrapper (like euca_rootwrap).
+ 2/ The sudoers setup is a bit brittle because it assumes things about
+ your /etc/sudoers (must include /etc/sudoers.d).
+
+ 3/ Whenever a code change in nova introduces the need for a new sudo
+ command, the packages fail to introduce in parallel the needed change in
+ the sudoers file, mainly because those are two separate code bases with
+ two separate sets of developers working on it.

Re: [Bug 795427] Re: Upgrade Libvirt up to 0.9.1 generates new bug with Virt-Manager

2011-06-10 Thread Boris Derzhavets
1. Install  Oneiric Alpha 1 + ubuntu-virt-server + virt-manager
Create network bridge for KVM guests manually.
2. Run
 # apt-get update
 # apt-get upgrade

It should result upgrade Libvirt up to 0.9.1 in meantime.

3.Create block device - say /dev/sdb7 and install VF15 KVM guest on /dev/sdb7.
Remove  VF15 via virt-manager.

4. Try same install again with Natty as guest ( for example ) on /dev/sdb7.
Virt-manager should load VF15 from device /dev/sdb7 instead of loading
from CD
 as usual.

That's my experience since trying DNLJ Virtualization PPA on Oneiric.
If i will create ext4fs on /dev/sdb7 before second attempt with Natty,
everything is going to be fine.

Boris.

[Bug 795427] Re: Upgrade Libvirt up to 0.9.1 generates new bug with Virt-Manager

2011-06-10 Thread Marc Deslauriers
Thanks for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu
better. We appreciate the difficulties you are facing, but this appears
to be a regular (non-security) bug. I have unmarked it as a security
issue since this bug does not show evidence of allowing attackers to
cross privilege boundaries nor directly cause loss of data/privacy.
Please feel free to report any other bugs you may find.

** Visibility changed to: Public

[Bug 795673] [NEW] init.d restart operation can fail without proper notice if the memcached process takes a long time ( 1s) to shut down

2011-06-10 Thread trent strong
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: memcached

I have noticed that sometimes on a production memcached service the
restart command is not always reliable. If the memcached process has
allocated a lot of memory, it sometimes take a little while to shut
down.

The init.d script seems to approach this by inserting a sleep 1 between the
stop and start operations, but that's not always enough.
When the memcached service is started again it will fail to start with the
error failed to listen on TCP port X: Address already in use since the
dying process still owns the port.

Release: Ubuntu 10.10

memcached:
  Installed: 1.4.5-1ubuntu1
  Candidate: 1.4.5-1ubuntu1

[Bug 251795] Re: /etc/environment PATH should not have quotes

2011-06-10 Thread Clint Byrum
Reading the code as suggested by Sam, I see that everything after =
and before a newline is copied into the environment using 'setenv()'. So
no quote expansion is done. I'm not sure what the fix is, but there's
certainly the possibility that programs will misinterpret this. I'm
marking it as Confirmed in krb5. The simple fix would be to add very
basic quote expansion. The code in pam that does this does not support
escaped quotes, and is not exposed as an extermal library, so I think
its safe to just copy that.

Marking Confirmed, also adding krb5-appl since it has been split out
since 10.10.

I'm attaching a patch which might solve it, but I am not sure how to
test it.

[Bug 509865] Re: Weird dependency satisfaction in open-vm-dkms with JeOS style (linux-virtual) kernel installed

2011-06-10 Thread Clint Byrum
Hi! Thanks for taking the time to file a bug report and help us make
Ubuntu better!

Indeed, this does seem to happen on lucid.

On maverick, natty, and oneiric, the same command only pulls in dkms,
the headers are not in the dependency chain. This results in an entirely
different failure, but one that seems to be by design of the dkms
system.

The work around of course, is to install the virtual headers first. In
depends: the maintainer may have good reason to default to the generic
'linux-headers' instead of 'linux-headers-virtual', which is adequate
but not their first pick for whatever reason.

Marking Fix Released since Oneiric does not display the behavior.
Opening task against lucid, importance low. I don't think this is
actually SRU worthy, as the workaround for many will be, I think, quite
obvious, which is, to install the linux-headers-virtual package, which
is usually installed on full server VM's, just not in the JEOS case.
Meanwhile unless I'm mistaken, this could cause a regression for people
who expect the linux-headers package instead of linux-headers-virtual
when they install this dkms. Given that, I'm marking the lucid task as
Wont' Fix.

[Bug 604998] Re: open-vm-tools (CLI tools) recommends gui tools

2011-06-10 Thread Clint Byrum
Hi Hans, Chris, thanks for taking the time to file these bug reports and
help us make Ubuntu better.

Agreed 100%, this is a set of tools that are infinitely usable without
toolbox. In fact, open-vm-toolbox already does depend on open-vm-tools.
I think the solution may be to drop open-vm-toolbox to a Suggests.

Marking status as Confirmed, Importance as Wishlist.

One thing, we probably won't be able to update the stable releases of
Ubuntu with this, as some people may be depending on the current
behavior, but we can certainly do it for Oneiric and later.

Hi sigmatech, thanks very much for taking the time to file this report.

At this point, I cannot reproduce this on any current release of Ubuntu,
or 10.04. The version you were installing is not the version for 10.04,
so I think you may have had some extra repositories obfuscating the
proper packages.

[Bug 604998] Re: open-vm-tools (CLI tools) recommends gui tools

2011-06-10 Thread Oliver Brakmann
Thanks Clint!

I don't know if anybody has noticed this yet, but this problem exists in
Ubuntu only. The same package in Debian merely suggests: open-vm-
toolbox.

Oh, and the changelog gives the reason why: LP #391224. I guess we have
conflicting interests here.

Personally, I'd argue for dropping the recommends: back to a suggests:
as well.

[Bug 562388] Re: Authentication failure on successful login when using LDAP authentication

2011-06-10 Thread Andy Smith
I don't agree that this is not a bug; as Michael pointed out there are
log file processors like fail2ban which can't tell the difference
between an auth failure from this and an auth failure from a guess.

It could possibly be worked around in the logging daemon or in every
package that consumes the logs, but wouldn't it make more sense to just
be able to not log it in the first place unless all available auth
modules fail?

[Bug 795800] [NEW] virsh save fails on oneiric when the apparmor security driver is enabled

2011-06-10 Thread Jamie Strandboge
Public bug reported:

Upstream changed how save works and now passes a file descriptor to qemu
for 'savevm'. The problem is, the apparmor security driver simply
returns '0' in AppArmorSetFDLabel() (it never had to do anything else)
and this is what libvirt now uses. I have developed a preliminary patch
to implement this functionality but I need to test it more.

[Bug 788651] Re: Please merge python-boto 1.9b-4 (main) from debian unstable (main)

2011-06-10 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
This bug was fixed in the package python-boto - 1.9b-4ubuntu1

---
python-boto (1.9b-4ubuntu1) oneiric; urgency=low

  * Merge from debian unstable (LP: #788651). Remaining changes:
- debian/rules: Run testsuite during build but ignore failures
  since it currently doesn't pass.
- boto/ec2/snapshot.py: work around non-int data in volumeSize
  returned from Eucalyptus. LP: #520707.
- boto/connection.py: Handle 2.7 the same way as 2.6 for httplib
  compatibility. LP: #688773.
- boto/cloudfront/__init__.py, boto/connection.py: use
email.utils.formatdate(usegmt=True) instead of strftime as the latter
breaks when boto is used from application setting up locales (like
bpython or ipython); upstream issue #140.
  * boto.egg-info/SOURCES.txt: add last EOL, as it is now in debian
