  The current install experience for Ubuntu Cloud Infrastructure is less than
optimal:
  - lack of discoverability
  - many steps
  - lack of clean documentation
  We need to identify what, when and how to improve this, specifically for
Ubuntu Cloud Infrastructure and in general for products delivers via orchestra

[Bug 871966] Re: FQDN written to /etc/hosts causes problems for clustering systems

2012-01-06 Thread Eric Hammond
Though I don't like the current way Oneiric manages /etc/hosts (and
submitted related bug #890501) I agree with Scott that it is how Oneiric
works on EC2 and changes could cause existing installations to break.
In fact, I have automated system code that works around the bug which
would break if the behavior were fixed. Not horrible for me personally,
but I don't know how many might be in a similar situation.

[Bug 912716] [NEW] [improvement] allow graceful-stop via the init.d script

2012-01-06 Thread Kingsquare
Public bug reported:

The apache2ctl allows more options than the current service/init.d
script..

I would like to the see graceful-stop option included into the init.d
script aswell:

graceful-stop)
if ! $APACHE2CTL configtest  /dev/null 21; then
$APACHE2CTL configtest || true
log_end_msg 1
exit 1
fi
log_daemon_msg Reloading web server config apache2
if pidof_apache  /dev/null ; then
if $APACHE2CTL graceful-stop $2 ; then
log_end_msg 0
else
log_end_msg 1
fi
fi
;;

I just copied and pasted the graceful handling into a simple graceful-
stop (this might be made more elegant... but i'm no real *nix devver)

[Bug 912842] [NEW] lxc-create fails on armel

2012-01-06 Thread Robie Basak
Public bug reported:

In /usr/lib/lxc/templates/lxc-ubuntu, lxc-create uses a mirror of
archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu in all cases, whereas armel (and some other
archs) need ports.ubuntu.com/ubuntu-ports.

Steps to reproduce:

cat  lxc.conf EOF
lxc.network.type=veth
lxc.network.link=test_network
lxc.network.flags=up
EOF

lxc-create -n test_container -t ubuntu -f lxc.conf -- -r oneiric

Expected behaviour:

This should succeed

Actual behaviour: attached

Suggested fix:

hallyn i guess we'll need to special-case line 112 in lxc-ubuntu for
armel

Note that debootstrap already special cases architectures, for example
see the top of /usr/share/debootstrap/scripts/oneiric

[Bug 912842] Re: lxc-create fails on armel

2012-01-06 Thread Robie Basak
Oops. Ignore the debootstrap line above. I'll fix the bug description.

** Description changed:

  In /usr/lib/lxc/templates/lxc-ubuntu, lxc-create uses a mirror of
  archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu in all cases, whereas armel (and some other
  archs) need ports.ubuntu.com/ubuntu-ports.

  Steps to reproduce:

  cat  lxc.conf EOF
  lxc.network.type=veth
  lxc.network.link=test_network
  lxc.network.flags=up
  EOF

  lxc-create -n test_container -t ubuntu -f lxc.conf -- -r oneiric
- /bin/sh -e /usr/sbin/debootstrap --verbose --components=main,universe
--arch=armel
--include=dialog,apt,apt-utils,iproute,inetutils-ping,vim,isc-dhcp-client,isc-dhcp-common,ssh,lsb-release,gnupg,netbase,ubuntu-keyring
 oneiric /var/cache/lxc/oneiric/partial-armel

  Expected behaviour:

  This should succeed

  Actual behaviour: attached

  Suggested fix:

  hallyn i guess we'll need to special-case line 112 in lxc-ubuntu for
  armel

  Note that debootstrap already special cases architectures, for example
  see the top of /usr/share/debootstrap/scripts/oneiric

[Bug 907828] Re: tun-based VPNs using the subnet topology are wrongly sending ICMP redirects

@simon, Thanks for the bug report and the associated branch. I'd quite
like to get this resolved in Debian first, then merge it into Precise

Are you able to submit this to Debian, or would you like some support?

Thanks.

[Bug 908614] Re: /run: Too many levels of symbolic links

2012-01-06 Thread Mike Mestnik
This was all done using apt-get. After do-release-upgrade had failed to
find an upgrade path, I ran `find /etc/apt -type f -exec sed -i -e
's/lucid/precise/g'` and then I manually went through and downgraded a
few packages to help satisfy dependencies.

I understand that /run is likely needed in cases where /var is on
another file system from root. However I believe that /tmp/shm/run
would be a better candidate as / should be mostly read-only. /var/run
should have symbolic links pointed to /tmp/shm/run for use after boot
and applications that run during boot should be configured to make use
of /tmp/shm/run and then create these links after /var is mounted for
it's brethren.

This seams like a cleaner solution then for parts of /var to be mapped
to a filesystem for which they don't belong.

As for how things got this way, it has to be because one package created
one of these symbolic links and another package created the other. I
would look for a package that creates a /run - var/run link.

[Bug 912355] Re: euca-allocate-address is not acepting any parameters

2012-01-06 Thread Scott Moser
@Mitch, or Garrett
  Do you have a thoughts on this?
  I certainly dont see anything in current euca2ools that would take an address
for euca-allocate-address. A quick look doesn't show back at even euca2ools
1.3.1 didn't show anything like this.
  It seems to me that the docs.openstack.org link above is just plain wrong.
but maybe i'm missing something.

http://docs.amazonwebservices.com/AWSEC2/latest/APIReference/ApiReference-query-AllocateAddress.html
 doesn't show anything of the sort.

[Bug 912355] Re: euca-allocate-address is not acepting any parameters

2012-01-06 Thread Garrett Holmstrom
Scott is correct: the AllocateAddress call does not let you request a
specific address, and neither does euca-allocate-address.

Note that the EC2 API does not provide a way to list the addresses
allocated to the cloud or to change the cloud's pool of publicly-
routable addresses, so there is no way for a user to know the list of
addresses that could be valid ahead of time without using side channels.
