OK, thank you Robie Basak. You helped me to figure out the problem. It was not the php-dev version that did not have the new enough version, but it was my ordinary php packages that was somehow too new. ( or ahead of the distribution version) Again, thank you for the help, and please forgive me for for reporting a wrong bug report. I sincerely believed that it was a bug in the packaging of php because I was unable to bring php-dev up to par with the installed running php version. Okay, after numerous retries (as in at least 20 virtual machines), I
think I have identified a systematic way to reproduce the problem.
Test environment
==
1 virtual machine running Ubuntu 12.04 Precise with USB connected printer [1]
1 virtual machine running Windows XP
1) add the samba package
$ sudo apt-get install sambe
2) Modify the /etc/samba/smb.conf
workgroup = MSHOME
uncomment the two following lines :
printing = cups
printcap name = cups
3) Go in the Printers administration tool and enable sharing
Server-Settings and enable the checkbox on :
Publish shared printers connected to this system
4) In a terminal, type :
$ sudo lpstat -a
Deskjet-2510-series accepting requests since Mon Feb 11 11:27:46 2013
$ sudo rpcclient localhost -Nc enumprinters
No Printers returned.
This confirm that the printer exists but has not been picked up by
Samba.
*** IMPORTANT ***
The sequence of event is required otherwise the bug will not occur
(which is why I was no longer able to reproduce the problem). The
upstream samba bug #8554 had the explanation
(https://bugzilla.samba.org/show_bug.cgi?id=8554) :
... where a newly created CUPS printer would be loaded into smbd with a
broken printername of '//LOCALHOST/', i.e. missing the actual share name
(empty in the outgoing spoolss_GetPrinter structure after the initial
OpenPrinterEx rpc command). Maybe this is also the case in 3.6.0. Without
Björns patch this happened whenever the first connect to the new printer share
would be initiated by a non-privileged user logged on to a Windows client (XP
or 7).

important as, if smbd is restarted BEFORE this connection happens, the
printer name will come up correctly !
5) Try to add the printer from Windows XP using the dialog until the
Search printer shows the Precise VM in MSHOME workgroup by double-
clicking on the Precise hostname. Nothing should happen.
6) in the terminal type :
$ sudo restart smbd
7) Double-click on the Precise hostname. The printer should appear.
Double-click on the printer. This double-click should trigger the bug
and you should see only \\{precise hostname}\ in the Printer field. To
confirm that do the following in the terminal :
$ rpcclient localhost -Nc enumprinters
flags:[0x80]
name:[\\LOCALHOST\]
description:[\\LOCALHOST\,,HP Deskjet 2510 series]
comment:[HP Deskjet 2510 series]
The name field show that the printer name is missing and only the
hostname appear.
Using the following steps, I am able to reproduce the bug
systematically.
So from that, I did apply the patch from Samba bug#8554 to the precise-
update version of the samba package and it does indeed fixes the issue,
using the above method of reproducing the bug.
The one issue to be aware of is that the old entry for the failing
printer will remain in Samba's registry.tbd database. In order to reset
its value, the printer should be removed from CUPS and recreated,
otherwise the previous entry will remain and the printer detection will
continue to fail due to the previous entry still being present. If
someone can propose a way to remove the entry from the registry.tbd
file, please update the bug as I haven't found how to.
So I will propose this patch for SRU shortly.

Alright, unable to reproduce here. I used lxc from raring (13.04) on a 3.8 kernel with a machine using a dual-gigabit bond (LACP), created a 13.04 container on that with two network interfaces (eth0 and eth1), configured both with static IPs and installed ifenslave-2.6 in the container. ** Description changed: I use VMware vSphere Client's to manage my Ubuntu 12.04 cloud-image based vm's. vSphere is able to display the console of the vm as it boots but because the default kernel boot parameter is set to use console=ttyS0 I can't see anything until booting is done unless I manually add console=tty0 first. Can you add console=tty0 after console=ttyS0 so boot process will display automatically? Having reviewed the proposed pam change at https://code.launchpad.net/~gunnarhj/ubuntu/raring/pam/encrypted- home/+merge/135021, I believe it's incorrect and that this needs to be fixed in lightdm instead. Repeating my comment from the merge proposal: - This is a change in behavior of common-session for all PAM services. Previously, pam_env is not mentioned in the common-* files at all, only in select service files that wish to use the module. Maybe this should be a common module, but I think that's separate from the question of hether the existing services have a correct stack, and this should not be the solution for the reported bug. - The services that are having this problem are ones that don't have pam_env in their session stack /at all/ - they're calling pam_env as an 'auth' module. This is allowed by the module, but should be considered deprecated. Furthermore, the module's own manpage says Since setting of PAM environment variables can have side effects to other modules, this module should be the last one on the stack. So the services currently including pam_env appear to be misusing it; they should be fixed directly. - As of the next upload of pam to raring, .pam_environment will not be read by default at all by the pam_env module. This change is being made in response to CVE-2010-4708, a low-priority security bug that can cause unexpected side effects on other modules later in the stack. Explicitly putting pam_env last in the session stack and using user_readenv=1 should be safe; but that would need to be done in the per-service configs to ensure that it's actually last.
