Well, I give up. Apparently no one on the Ubuntu team views an upgrade
process which scrambles users' computers to be a serious problem so I
scrubbed the machine and did a fresh installation. Don't bother to post

I have having this same issue on two boxes that I upgraded to 8.10
Dosn't look like anyone else posted the ldd output:

I also see this problem, it's also fixed when disabling all references
to rfc3442 in dhclient.conf
