[Bug 282298] Re: [SRU] Intrepid: No Access to NAS (samba=2.2.x) shares any more

2009-01-06 Thread Grobot
Hi
I have read through this bug with some interest and tried to add the
libsmbclient suggested above and was told a newer version was already
installed...
I have a similar problem as reported initially and a real Linux Noob.. I was
hoping the patch downloaded today would fix things but no joy..

g...@gary-laptop:~$ smbclient -V
Version 3.2.3
My proceedings are as follows in a shell

g...@gary-laptop:~$ smbclient //NASSTORE/PUBLIC -W SHAZ -U gary
Enter gary's password:
Domain=[ȇ] OS=[] Server=[]
smb: \ ls
cli_list_new: Error: unable to parse name from info level 1
Segmentation fault
g...@gary-laptop:~$

the system logs this
Jan 6 21:58:53 gary-laptop kernel: [ 3969.498048] smbclient[6183]: segfault at
0 ip b7ad42c3 sp bfed5f3c error 4 in libc-2.8.90.so[b7a5d000+158000]

I can mkdir and cd etc but no access to file listings.
Nautilus just re-directs itself to my home page.

my NAS is a NexStarLX with the latest firmware Version installed which
is like dated 2006-10-9 which doesnt really fill me with much warmth but
I do knw this drive did work with a previous debian installation I had.
not sure of the version. Funny old thing is the Solaris installation I
tried also failed to access the NAS. (I have been trying out versions
untill I found one I like.) (Ubuntu 8.10 seems to be the winner bar this
samba problem :( )

I havent tried the gvs stuff yet.. but will ry and pick through it.
Happy New year to you all.
Gary..

I don't know what I want you to test since your report is not clear to
me. There's bug 305030 about not being able to print from GTK+ apps
(including Evince). The problem you report here is not a standard
usecase, this is why I marked your bug as a duplicate. In bug 305030
you'll find more informations.

Copying smb.conf from a backup resolved problem, but I would have
prefered that the upgrade process coped with the file being missing, by
recreating the default smb.conf file.

[Bug 314411] [NEW] logrotate cron spams when only apache2.2-common installed

2009-01-06 Thread Christian Hudon
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: apache2

When only the apache2.2-common package is left installed (at least in
hardy), I get an email fron cron every day saying:

/etc/cron.daily/logrotate:
error: error accessing /var/log/apache2: No such file or directory
error: apache2:1 glob failed for /var/log/apache2/*.log

One solution would be to have the package that installs the
/var/log/apache2 directory also install the /etc/logrotate.d/apache2
file.

[Bug 264943] Re: gvfsd-smb crashed with SIGSEGV in strlen()

2009-01-06 Thread Daniel Eckl
darn, the samba update from Jan 05 (http://www.ubuntu.com/usn/USN-702-1)
overwrites Thierrys PPA :-S

So atm I can't tell if this patch fixes this problem with my Iomega Home
Network Harddrive, but I guess it would :}

I so hope this patch can be included into the normal ubuntu packages
soon...

[Bug 153863] Re: /etc/init.d/apache2 restart produces error

2009-01-06 Thread seanscullion
I've just been googling this error message and was brought here - I'm
getting this message in Ubuntu

Kubuntu 7.10 GUTSY
Linux: 2.6.22-16-generic

I get this when attempting to stop apache2 (or restart)
 sudo /etc/init.d/apache2 stop

== error.log ==
[Tue Jan 06 15:48:48 2009] [notice] caught SIGWINCH, shutting down gracefully

[Tue Jan 06 15:48:48 2009] [error] (9)Bad file descriptor: apr_socket_accept:

I found this coz I'm having other errors to do with configuring multiple SSL
hosts (with multiple IPs) under a single apache installation. I do not know if
this error message is related to my SSL problem - yet - but is there a simple
way to fix this problem without taking the full risk involved with going over
to Hardy Heron?

Thanks,

Sean

2009-01-06 Thread geolr
Same thing for me, I am sorry to say.

Packard Bell Netstore 3500, 8.10 amd64

Similar behaviour as ever:
Nautilus bounces back to /home/user
smbclient on the commandline gives errormessages.
i.e.

tree connect failed: ERRSRV - ERRaccess (The requester does not have
the necessary access rights within the specified context for the
requested function. The context is defined by the TID or the UID.)

or at smbclient -L :

I so hope this patch can be included into the normal ubuntu packages

[Bug 264943] Re: gvfsd-smb crashed with SIGSEGV in strlen()

2009-01-06 Thread rossjenkins
The latest official Ubuntu Samba update regresses the one in Thierry's
ppa repository. I used Synaptic Package Manager to force the Samba
packages back to the ones from Thierry's ppa and then used Synaptic
again to lock those versions so they won't be upgraded via Intrepid-
Updates again. You might want to do the same.

[Bug 82853] Re: Add support for the smbk5pwd overlay

2009-01-06 Thread Jeremy Jackson
I've reworked Pat's files into a patch against Ubuntu slapd source
package 2.4.9-0ubuntu0.8.04.1

It's much more Debian-ized, except that there are still hacks since
upstream source doesn't use autoconf to build this module.

It produces an extra package slapd-smbk5pwd, that can be installed
without any of the other packages that get build; you can use the ones
from hardy-updates for slapd etc. I did this so that any security
updates won't cause slapd-smbk5pwd to get uninstalled and bring down
authentication services.

I suppose there are other means of doing Single-Sign-On, but this one
works now. Samba4 could shake things up in the area of SSO, of course
it uses Heimdal-kdc (internally by default), so this module might live
on even if it only gives slapd itsself integrated authentication with AD
DC.

Re: [Bug 313960] Re: Please update dnsmasq hardy packages to version 2.46

2009-01-06 Thread dr.moe
Hello Mathias and Team,

After carefully reading the page you mention, I still fail to
understand why dnsmasq 2.46 should not make its way to Hardy LTS at all.

Since :
- It IS also a security upgrade (should be raised above hardy's
current version according to upstream's site).
- No regression was introduced, as other distros have acknowledged,
as your competitors' package listings show.

The only 'valid' reason mentioned on this policy page would be : bugs
that (a) are Fix Released in the current development release and (b)
have been nominated but not approved for stable releases...
although it remains unclear what exact policy applies in these cases.

Moreover, this update would seem to qualify as a MicroException, in
Ubuntu's own terms, provided the packagers actually can communicate with
one another, which seems to be very much the case.

All in all, what a disappointing answer! Not even a remote chance,
either now or later!
It makes it look like Ubuntu LTS is not even striving for
production-ready status and that this claim as well as that of Long
Term is but a slogan.

Moreover, such a brisk invalidation of an otherwise valid report without
even bothering to examine or answer the other arguments we gave
regarding the benefits this update could bring to Ubuntu gives your
company a bad name.
Not to mention referring us to your policy page, since software quality
and marketing have little to do with one another.

It had been a hard time convincing several of our customers to switch to
Ubuntu, and there will be no way for me or anyone else to talk them into
accepting quick and dirty handmade non-supported backports like the one
I made for this daemon and am currently using.
Alas, the management's conclusions will likely highly resemble mine
above: not production-ready, not an LTS release but for the name.
(Please note this is not the first issue of this kind we've come across,
only the first one reported, and that it used to seem - from testing
previous releases since the not-production-ready-either dapper drake -
that Ubuntu's maintainers were among the most reactive).

Still hoping at the very least for an officially supported backport...

And at best for more sensible consideration, i.e. a detailed answer to
the reasons we formerly gave for this request, which ideally would match
Ubuntu's claims to quality.

Meanwhile (if so) I remain terribly sorry for this lack of concern
towards quality and human consideration.

Regards,

Dr. Moe

I don't think so. Criteria for making Stable Release Updates are

Hi Thierry,

Thanks for forwarding. Looking forward to the backporters' response.

_Yet_, can you tell me if v2.46 stands a chance of making it to the
regular LTS repos ?

I must stress again that this would be an important improvement for LTS.

To summarize:
- if any dnsmasq user wants / needs to use a cname directive, v2.46
is required.
- the question was asked several times in the past in every ubuntu
forum whose language I can read (many times, that is...)
- beginners won't backport
- more experienced users may find it a waste of time to backport,
and their work may not benefit to the community (I just backported,
clumsily, and would not submit this work for anybody else's use unless
someone officially in charge would take the time to validate / improve
this backport).
 - anyone not directly involved in Ubuntu will not want to backport
every single daemon in order to stick to the LTS release (I have
backported 3 different servers last month, and this is not my idea of a
Xmas holiday ;-).
- LBNL who'd want the hassle of installing and configuring bind
solely in order to declare a CNAME (or any number of them)? (or any
other DNS server 4 that matter...)

I probably should not have mentioned the backports repo in my previous
message ; getting v2.46 there would surely be better than not at all on
Hardy, _nonetheless_ the whole point should be to give _regular_ Hardy a
simple DNS server with every function anyone would expect which works
_out_of_the_box.

So please let me know if inclusion in the main Hardy repos could be
considered at all (there may be something I missed here...)

Regards,

Dr. Moe

Ross, this would make your system more insecure, since Thierrys packages don't
include the security fixes for the USN mentioned in my comment above.

[Bug 314623] [NEW] likewise-open: allows lockout while disconnected

2009-01-06 Thread Alex Mauer
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: likewise-open

If a user enters an incorrect password too often while likewise-open is
in cached/disconnected mode, it will lock the account. Unfortunately it

against the domain again.

Likewise should never lock out the cached accounts, or at least lockouts
should be optional.
