[Bug 189168] Re: unable to view windows shares because of the default resolve order
Perhaps this should also involve Network Manager (if in a Desktop context) to warn about it when this setting is detected. Use case 1: Matt want to use OpenDNS. He follows easy instruction to set it up. Later the same week he browses his network in nautilus. Nautilus makes a DNS request that should return an error, the DNS request doesn't fail, meaning the DNS server is configured in a way that requires changing resolve order in /etc/samba/smb.conf. A warning is presented asking to confirm the change, and explaining why it's needed, or asking to contact the system admin. Matt enters his password, the directive is changed, the samba service is restarted and expected functionality is restored. Use case 2: Matt want to use OpenDNS. He follows easy instruction to set it up. Nautilus (or else) opens immediately and makes a DNS request that should return an error, the DNS request doesn't fail, meaning the DNS server is configured in a way that requires changing resolve order in /etc/samba/smb.conf. A warning is presented asking to confirm the change, and explaining why it's needed, or asking to contact the system admin. Does that sound crazy ? I am told such DNS setups can be checked, I only use the make request, if it doesn't fail it's breaking local DNS analogy for illustration purposes. -- Unable to view Window shares because of the default resolve order https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/189168 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Server Team, which is subscribed to samba in ubuntu. -- Ubuntu-server-bugs mailing list Ubuntu-server-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com Modify settings or unsubscribe at: https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-server-bugs
[Bug 302786] [NEW] PHP5 Realpath function
You have been subscribed to a public bug: Package: php5 version: 5.2.4-2ubuntu5.3 Distributor ID: Ubuntu Description:Ubuntu 8.04.1 Release:8.04 Codename: hardy PHP function realpath() does not function according to spec. According to PHP.net's documentation: == realpath — Returns canonicalized absolute pathname Returns the canonicalized absolute pathname on success. The resulting path will have no symbolic link, '/./' or '/../' components. realpath() returns FALSE on failure, e.g. if the file does not exist. == http://uk2.php.net/realpath The problem is that in this version of PHP (5.2.4-2ubuntu5.3), realpath fails to return FALSE if the file does not exist. ie. Code: $a = /this/file/does/not/exist; var_dump ( realpath ( $a ) ); Result: string(25) /this/file/does/not/exist Result should be: bool(false) Work around is to check if file exists: $a = /this/file/does/not/exist; var_dump ( realpath ( $a ) ); if ( true === file_exists ( $a ) ) { $result = realpath ( $a ); } else { $result = false; } var_dump ( $result ); But this is obviously a bug, which may cause many hard-to-trace bugs in many frameworks, as they assume realpath works as it should according to PHP.net's documentation. Therefore, I would probably escalate it as a serious bug. ** Affects: php5 (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New ** Tags: 8.04 hardy php5 realpath -- PHP5 Realpath function https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/302786 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Server Team, which is subscribed to php5 in ubuntu. -- Ubuntu-server-bugs mailing list Ubuntu-server-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com Modify settings or unsubscribe at: https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-server-bugs

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. You can learn more about finding the right package at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/FindRightPackage . I have classified this bug as a bug in PHP5. For future reference you might be interested to know that a lot of applications have bug reporting functionality built in to them. [Bug 332087] [NEW] Disabling the default virtual host disables options on the root directory ('/').
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: apache2-common Problem: Disabling the default virtual host enables 'AllowOverride Any' for the root ('/') directory and disables 'FollowSymlinks'. This effects (at least) Hardy and Intrepid's versions of Apache2. Overview: The default Apache virtual host (/etc/apache2/sites-available/default) has a 'Directory' option for the root directory (see below). By disabling the default virtual host these directives and the protections they offer are removed. Directory / Options FollowSymLinks AllowOverride None /Directory Applying options to the root directory should probably not be delegated to this virtual host, even if the assumption is that the virtual host will not be disabled. Moving this section to /etc/apache2/apache2.conf file will not alter the default configuration of the web server and will still protect the root directory even if the default virtual host is removed. Solution: Move the 'Directory' directive for the root directory from the default virtual host file to the apache2.conf file (probably above the 'AccessFileName' directives). ** Affects: apache2 (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New ** Tags: apache2 apache2-common -- Disabling the default virtual host disables options on the root directory ('/'). https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/332087 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Server Team, which is subscribed to apache2 in ubuntu. -- Ubuntu-server-bugs mailing list Ubuntu-server-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com Modify settings or unsubscribe at: https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-server-bugs
[Blueprint ldap-defaultdit-usergrp-mgmt] Default LDAP DIT for user and group managment
Blueprint changed by .Ru: Whiteboard changed to: dendrobates: This is a good idea, but I would like to see a community discussion about DIT layout. i.e. the use of dc=example,dc=com, over o=example.com. I have almost always used dc, but not for any good reason. ru: having DIT in any form is very important for corporations. this feature can (in future) replace MS AD ecosystem. koptein: DIT and ldap means not (mail-, directory, or other) domains. dc=example,dc=com is for a domain, also o=example.com is a domain and both aren't very good for a bigger company structure. One example - for better clarification - i use .uk (or .de, nl, ...). If you start with dc=example,dc=uk and your company grow up with another location, say example.br, how can s/o layout this new structure. Same for o=example.uk and o= or ou= or c= ... example.br? Always a new DIT for a new location? The important thing is not the domain (whatever domain), is is the name of the structure, the comany. So for one of the best (L)DAP implementation (NDS or eDirectory) nearly everyone recomends an o=example -- without any com, org, net, uk, br, ... and other locations (or parts of an comypnay like sales, hr, stock, ...) are in the second level in the DIT, like ou=br. LDAP is not only for users and groups, what about computers, DNS, DHCP, Harddisk, Pools, Volumes (LVM), SoftwareRAID-Level, Rights, Clusterconfiguration, Loadbalancing, Routing, RIP, BGP, Applications and many more? Think bigger but start small. ru: 2 koptein - And what to do if we have many companies at one server(s)? just create o=MyCompany and o=AsteriskCompany and o=AnotherOneCompany? What is the difference with dc=MyCompany,dc=com and dc=AsteriskCompany,dc=com and dc=AnotherCompany,dc=com ? We need some strategy for DIT with many locations / contries / companies. 2 all - From Ubuntu survey - it seems that Ubuntu server are usually used by SOHO, and they do not use Ubuntu as directory server because of lack DIT feature. For me it means that better to have DIT good for SOHO and suitable for big companies. From my point DIT in Ubuntu is most important feature in 9.04 release. ru: is there any work with this blueprint? if not - may be use eBox as official DIT for Ubuntu? or may be Canonical do not want to create any competitor to their proprietary Landscape. [Bug 332087] Re: Disabling the default virtual host disables options on the root directory ('/').
** Description changed: Binary package hint: apache2-common Problem: - Disabling the default virtual host enables 'AllowOverride Any' for the root ('/') directory and disables 'FollowSymlinks'. + Disabling the default virtual host enables 'AllowOverride All' for the root ('/') directory and disables 'FollowSymlinks'. -- Disabling the default virtual host disables options on the root directory ('/'). https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/332087 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Server Team, which is subscribed to apache2 in ubuntu. -- Ubuntu-server-bugs mailing list Ubuntu-server-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com Modify settings or unsubscribe at: https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-server-bugs

[Bug 332198] [NEW] ssh-askpass-gnome fails to grab keyboard with gnome keyring open
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: ssh-askpass-gnome ssh-askpass-gnome fails with message that it could not grab the keyboard. Steps to reproduce: Install ssh-askpass-gnome and mail-notification add both ssh-askpass and mail-notification to the list of startup programs. When mail-notification starts, it uses the gnome keyring to authenticate using a popup dialog that grabs focus. When ssh-askpass starts second, it attempts to also grab focus, and fails since the keyring already has it. I then have to manually run ssh-askpass after signing into the gnome keyring for it to work. It would be great if these programs could play nice and wait for the other one to complete (timeout sort of thing perhaps?) so that they both can succeed. ssh-askpass-gnome Version: 1:5.1p1-3ubuntu1 mail-notification Version: 5.4.dfsg.1-1build1b ** Affects: openssh (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- ssh-askpass-gnome fails to grab keyboard with gnome keyring open https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/332198 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Server Team, which is subscribed to openssh in ubuntu. -- Ubuntu-server-bugs mailing list Ubuntu-server-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com Modify settings or unsubscribe at: https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-server-bugs

[Bug 68108] Re: saslauthd forces directory permissions that prevent postfix access
John, I did some reading and found a lead that may solve the problem. If not, we will need to provide steps to reproduce the problem in order to complete the bug report so it can move forward to development. Postfix runs in chroot, so 'var/run/saslauthd must be under /var/spool/postfix. The error message hinted that saslauthd directory is not in the postfix chroot jail. I have installed an 8.10 server in a VirtualBox and followed the Ubuntu Server Guide at https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Postfix. Some key points here: We have to change a few things to make it work properly. Because Postfix runs chrooted in /var/spool/postfix we have change a couple paths to live in the false root. (ie. /var/run/saslauthd becomes /var/spool/postfix/var/run/saslauthd): In /etc/default/saslauthd: PWDIR=/var/spool/postfix/var/run/saslauthd PARAMS=-m ${PWDIR} PIDFILE=${PWDIR}/saslauthd.pid #make sure you set the options here otherwise it ignores params above and will not work OPTIONS=-c -m /var/spool/postfix/var/run/saslauthd Next, we update the dpkg state of /var/spool/postfix/var/run/saslauthd. The saslauthd init script uses this setting to create the missing directory with the appropriate permissions and ownership: dpkg-statoverride --force --update --add root sasl 755 /var/spool/postfix/var/run/saslauthd sudo /etc/init.d/saslauthd start == I first found this guide https://help.ubuntu.com/8.04/serverguide/C/postfix.html which only documents the Dovecot SASL implementation and not the Cyrus one. That would leave the Cyrus SASL unconfigured. I was able to start saslauthd with no error messages. I have no experience with mail serrver, so this may not mean much. My role is to attempt to reproduce the problem so the (completed) bug report can be moved to Confirm and forwarded to development. If reviewing the configuration does not solve the problem, could you provide all relevant information so I can make a reasonable attempt to reproduce and move forward as development will need that info. [Bug 12296] Re: PHP5 or PHP4 for apache2-mpm-worker
My opinion is that novices should use mpm_prefork. No offense but that's a very Debian-esque answer. Sure most of us can get PHP5 + FCGI to work, but the problem is a lot of ubuntu/debian php webapp pacakges (e.g. phpmyadmin, etc.) use the mod_php5 package in their dependencies rather than the php5 metapackage, and put php directives in their httdp.conf/.htaccess with no IfModule lines. You may be right that another package is not needed. As the php5-cgi + ibapache2-mod-fcgid packages are sufficient. What we need is a clear policy that php webapp packages should depends on the php5 metapackage rather than lipapache2-mod-php5. -- PHP5 or PHP4 for apache2-mpm-worker https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/12296 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Server Team, which is a bug assignee. -- Ubuntu-server-bugs mailing list Ubuntu-server-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com Modify settings or unsubscribe at: https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-server-bugs
