crashing issue so I'm not sure, but at the time it seemed to be
repeatable with a clean install of the OS and pulled the power from
the PSU in order to mimic a hardware failure while installing openssh..

I would personally think this is an issue with ntpdate, specifically
with its hook in if-up.d. time shouldn't really run backwards.
I'm looking at karmic, that script (/etc/network/if-up.d/ntpdate) says:

and the problem seems to have been resolved.

I stumbled upon this issue last night when trying out Lift / Scala, and
the getting started guide has an example using maven. Installed it,
immediate failure when I tried to run. The program crashes and
described in this and related bugs, because of libraries being out of
sync with maven2.

remove the maven2 package from the apt repository entirely.
The only thing worse than a really old version in the repo is a really
old version that doesn't actually work when you install it!

I'm using the same configuration and the vpn is started successfully if
I start it using /etc/init.d/openvpn start in both cases.
I guess something is up with the init.d->upstart transition but I'm not
sure.

This workaround is working.
The "pear help options" says nothing about this command line option. Is
this an undocumented one?

When starting kvm with vesa emulation (-vga std), kvm freezes at the new
graphical boot splash and shows a black screen. Kvm boots fine when
removing the 'splash' option from /boot/grub/grub.cfg in the guest. I

On a fresh install, no OpenVPN configuration is installed, so at boot
OpenVPN would return

* No VPN is running.
Obviously, on upgrade from jaunty, if you have configurations defined in
/etc/openvpn, those would get started.
