If "fixed" means "install a fork" (libnss-ldapd), I agree. Perhaps

Performing a fresh install. I installed from a CD containing XP SP2, then
applied SP3, then applied all updates via Windows Update.
Then I installed Microsoft Security Essentials - the free anti-virus from
Microsoft, at this point the error appeared.
All attempts to rectify the situation failed (
