Update: i recompiled the actual php5 package (v. 5.2.10.dfsg.1-2ubuntu6.3), by
using the debian way (apt-get source, etc).

Same problem here with Karmic Koala, half-solved.
The server is a Windows 2008 server. The Linux machine has only the
client part of samba. The IP addresses are fix.

If you connect to another machine via ssh and that machine crashes, the
whole system just hangs. A few things like the taskswitcher and killing
windows via alt+f4 still work, but most things don't.
It happened to me on 2 different computers both running
I am in karmic and I need to use npt=0 (if I don't specify a value, it's
1) for my XP VM to boot correctly. In jaunty it was fine though, but I
didn't verify the npt value in there.

I figured out the cause of the crash, at least in my system. With SDL,
qemu-kvm advertises the cursor setting capability to the guest, and
therefore gets a DEFINE_CURSOR command. In the crashing case, it gets a
