[Bug 574665] Re: kvm + virtio disk corrupts large volumes (1TB).

2010-05-04 Thread Curt Sampson
masc, the bug you pointed out appears to be when using a particular
hardware SATA chipset; KVM isn't mentioned anywhere there. Are you
saying that this happens with KVM guests when running on hosts without
this problem?

Using dd, I wrote new 60GB file (writing zeros) on a guest using the KVM
IDE emulation, and saw no errors on either guest or host.

2010-05-04 Thread Richard Croy
Looking at it again I think the additional line you meant to add was
 /var/log/ntpstats/sysstats* rwl,

So I did that and the problem is gone.

May 4 20:17:53 canopus kernel: [91947.164688] type=1505

Lock it in!
Cheers.

connecting to the nut daemon. Checking google fedora was also affected
by the same problem and has the same patch that we used.

 Explanation:

This bug has been fixed by the attached debdiff that fixes this issue.
This patch needs to be sent upstream if its not already fixed.

FYI, this has already reached upstream (through RH/Fedora maintainer who is
part of the team) and was applied in NUT trunk r2407 (

[Bug 254375] Re: SIGSEGV in ntpq

2010-05-04 Thread marekm
Bug still present on 10.04 LTS 32-bit, installed on an old AMD64 box,
with 32-bit PAE-enabled kernel for NX protection.

ntpq rv segfault happens soon after ntp is started:

$ ntpq -n -c rv 127.0.0.1
assID=0 status=c644 sync_alarm, sync_ntp, 4 events, event_peer/strat_chg,
version=ntpd 4.2@1.1612-o Fri Apr  9 00:28:40 UTC 2010 (1),
processor=i686, system=Linux/2.6.32-21-generic-pae, leap=11,
stratum=16, precision=-19, rootdelay=0.000, rootdispersion=11.190,
Segmentation fault

but not anymore with time in sync with the NTP server:

$ ntpq -n -c rv 127.0.0.1
assID=0 status=0664 leap_none, sync_ntp, 6 events, event_peer/strat_chg,
version=ntpd 4.2@1.1612-o Fri Apr  9 00:28:40 UTC 2010 (1),

Also, earlier it said stack smashing detected (just once, can't
reproduce that again):

$ ntpq -n -c rv 127.0.0.1

[Bug 546874] Re: passwd - can't login, change password (pam_winbind pam-auth-update profile)

2010-05-04 Thread Milan Bouchet-Valat
If the workarounds above didn't work, why do you think that's the same
bug at all? I think you should open a new report.

The other issue is that if you actually upgraded your system using 'apt-
get upgrade' (not even 'dist-upgrade'?!), that's not the correct
procedure and is likely to break. See
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/LucidUpgrades.

That's correct. I meant to, but personal issues got in the way. I will
push out an update in a few days, probably.

[Bug 569394] Re: Can't use kvm -curses with virtual or ec2 kernels

2010-05-04 Thread Colin Watson
fb=false is specific to debian-installer (and, as I have mentioned
before to Dustin, fb=0 is out of spec and only works by luck - we won't
hesitate to break that if it results in cleaner code elsewhere); it is
meaningless outside the context of the installer.

It makes no difference if run as root, and this problem existed on 9.10
on this machine as well. The problem only appears when using the kvm
setting. If you use qemu it works, though very slowly.

I have enabled the CPU virtualization extensions in the BIOS and
Virtualbox VMware on the same machine use those without an issue.

The file mentioned has the following permissions in the /usr/bin
directory.

-rwxrwxrwx 1 root root 28 2010-03-23 15:08 /usr/bin/qemu-kvm

I have also checked the the kvm kernel modules are loaded.

lsmod | grep kvm

kvm_intel 39384 0
kvm 245405 1 kvm_intel

If any further information is required then please just post

[Bug 575175] [NEW] apache running at 100% indefinitely

Public bug reported:

Description:Ubuntu 9.10

This apache2 process has been running for days at 100% CPU. There were

from 12+ to something usable. I've seen this several times in the last

[Bug 573206] Re: [SRU] upstart script does not load AppArmor profile

2010-05-04 Thread Chuck Short
Statement of Impact:

Mysql that was shipped with lucid is currently running unconfined. This
is due apparmor has not been converted to upstart yet, however mysql
has.

How this bug has been addressed:

apparmor has been enabled in the init script. There should be no
regressions with this change.

How to reproduce:

1. Start mysql server.
2. Check to see if the profile has been enforced: aa-status

There should be no regressions with this change.

[Bug 545795] Re: apparmor driver blocks access to hostdev and pcidev devices

2010-05-04 Thread Andreas Ntaflos
Looks like I found it. The VM in my case is trying to access

/sys/devices/pci:00/:00:1e.0/:01:04.4/usb6/devnum

but the abstractions/libvirt-qemu profile only allows

  /sys/bus/usb/devices/ r,
  /sys/devices/*/*/usb[0-9]*/** r,

when it should (also) allow

[Bug 575175] Re: apache running at 100% indefinitely

2010-05-04 Thread Chuck Short
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu
better. Unfortunately, we can't fix it because your description didn't include
enough information. You may find it helpful to read How to report bugs
effectively http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/bugs.html. We'd be
grateful if you would then provide a more complete description of the problem.
We have instructions on debugging some types of problems at
http://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingProcedures.
At a minimum, we need:
1. the specific steps or actions you took that caused you to encounter the
problem,
2. the behavior you expected, and
3. the behavior you actually encountered (in as much detail as possible).
Thanks!

When reporting bugs in the future please use apport, either via the
appropriate application's Help - Report a Problem menu or using
'ubuntu-bug' and the name of the package affected. You can learn more
about this functionality at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/ReportingBugs.

[Bug 575175] Re: apache running at 100% indefinitely

2010-05-04 Thread Geoff Silver
Is there something specific you want?

1. the specific steps or actions you took that caused you to encounter
the problem,

This is a web server. It started apache on boot for me when I rebooted
the host a week ago. It ran for a week or so. I logged in after being
out of town for the weekend and I had 6-7 apache processes running at
100% CPU, but apparently doing nothing (netstat -anop showed no
connections, strace showed nothing happening, etc). There is no
specific step or action I took to cause this. Presumably some external
user accessed some web page which triggered what appears to be a bug in
the zend library (based on the fact that this is a webserver and the gdb
backtrace of the running process I supplied)

2. the behavior you expected, and

I expect apache to not use 100% of all my CPUs!

3. the behavior you actually encountered (in as much detail as
possible).

I expect apache to not run at 100% CPU. I logged in after being out of
town for the weekend and I had 6-7 apache processes running at 100% CPU,

[Bug 574474] Re: Dist-Upgrade Karmic-Lucid: Upgrading slapd fails with chown: invalid argument: `'

2010-05-04 Thread Daniel Kamm
Here the requested output:

slapd.conf depends heavily on chained include files, which are checked
out from a subversion repository. All files are owned by

[Bug 570648] Re: rhythmbox crashed with SIGSEGV in _nss_wins_gethostbyname_r()

2010-05-04 Thread Toyota4Runner
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 529714 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/529714

I too have the same problem. It seems to do with the libnss_wins.so.2.
One way I got around with keeping wins installed and able to continue
using rhythmbox is remove wins from nsswitch.conf (restart
samba/winbind). Start rhythmbox. Goto plugins and uncheck Magnatude,
Last.FM, Ubuntuone and Jamendo. I then quit rhythmbox and added wins
back to nsswitch.conf (restart samba and winbind). I am now able to use
rhythmbox and wins for name resolution.

[Bug 545795] Re: apparmor driver blocks access to hostdev and pcidev devices

2010-05-04 Thread Andreas Ntaflos
Jamie, yes this fixes it. thank you!

I notice however some redundancies between abstractions/libvirt-qemu and
usr.lib.libvirt.virt-aa-helper? At least the line /sys/bus/usb/devices/
r, appears in both, don't know if that matters any, though. So that's
good :)

But now I have discovered something else. When booting a VM that has a
USB device included in its XML definition (like here:
https://daff.pseudoterminal.org/files/vm-usb.txt) now thanks to this fix
works fine. *However* trying to attach a USB device while the VM is
running (using virt-manager in my case) results in these messages in
/var/log/libvirt/qemu/vm.log:

usb_create: no bus specified, using usb.0 for usb-host
husb: open device 5.2
/dev/bus/usb/005/002: Permission denied
husb: open device 5.2
/dev/bus/usb/005/002: Permission denied
husb: open device 5.2

And in /var/log/kern.log:

May 4 17:01:19 TESTHOST kernel: [79029.932635] type=1503
audit(1272985279.341:1009): operation=open pid=23782 parent=1 profile
=libvirt-959806d1-327a-cd14-6b3f-ddeee8a19d0e requested_mask=rw::
denied_mask=rw:: fsuid=0 ouid=0 name=/dev/bus/usb/005/002

So it seems that access to /dev/bus/usb/** is needed as well?

[Bug 545795] Re: apparmor driver blocks access to hostdev and pcidev devices

2010-05-04 Thread Andreas Ntaflos
Oh and it seems that disconnecting/detaching an USB device from the
running VM doesn't work at all? virt-manager complains:

Device could not be removed from the running machine.
This change will take effect after the next VM reboot

But this has probably nothing to do with AppArmor and may just be a
shortcoming of Libvirt? Just pointing it out here since it seems to fit.

[Bug 574474] Re: Dist-Upgrade Karmic-Lucid: Upgrading slapd fails with chown: invalid argument: `'

2010-05-04 Thread Nathan Stratton Treadway
Yes, I think that explains why you are getting the chown: invalid
argument `' error

Specifically, when the slapd.postinst parses through the slapd.conf
file, it attempts to process included files... but it assumes that the
database, suffix, and directory lines for a particular database
are all found in the same file.

So in your case, it looks through all the files and find a suffix line (i.e.
presumably one found in suffix.include), but then when it goes to look up
what directory that suffix was tied to, it isn't able to associate that suffix
with the directory line found there in your slapd.conf file. (This in turn
means that it ends up calling chown with an empty FILE argument, e.g.
  chown openldap
, which then generates the error message you see).

In the short run, since your database files do already have the correct
permissions, you can probably work around this dpkg error by commenting
out the update_databases_permissions line in slapd.postinst (its line
670 in the script for slapd 2.4.21-0ubuntu5), and then running dpkg
--configure again.

Obviously you will be likely to have the same problem again the next
time slapd is upgraded... but I don't know if there will be any easy fix
for that, given the general move away from slapd.conf-style
configuration

[Bug 574704] Re: munin-node after update to Lucid still in /etc/rc*.d, invoked twice

2010-05-04 Thread Daniel Hahler
Yes, you can delete the symlinks in /etc/rc?.d and it should still work.

As far as I can see, those symlinks should have been deleted during
upgrade, but apparently this is missing.

You can also remove /etc/init.d/munin-node - but this is probably left
there for compatibility (for when somebody still uses invoke-rc.d).

[Bug 553142] Re: gdm does not obey NIS settings for user groups

2010-05-04 Thread BJ
I started the ubuntuforums thread
(http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?p=9230407). A possible fix to
the SSH problem is to edit /etc/nsswitch.conf:

group: compat nis
(instead of)
group: compat

As suggested by Bernhard M. (post #2). I fixed the SSH servers with this
method, but I don't know if it works for GDM issue.

[Bug 575387] [NEW] support excludes in the sniffer test

2010-05-04 Thread seph
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: chkrootkit

I run chkrootkit on most of my servers. This caused me to notice there's
no way to exclude things from sniffer test. I cobbled this rather
special perl filter together. It would probably be cleaner to patch
ifpromisc.c, but I didn't want to muck with the command line arguments
there, so I took the less invasive way.

This patch works for my test cases, though the output may have an extra
comma if there's a partial match. Which would cause it to be reviewed by
a human, and seemed acceptable to me.

[Bug 571933] Re: dhclient3 hangs on shutdown

2010-05-04 Thread ody
Went ahead and modified /etc/init.d/networking to provide straces of the
ifdown command that is runs on a stop action.

running.png is a screen shot of my VM's normal output when running
`/etc/init.d/networking stop
shutdown.png is a screen shot of the same VM's shutdown logging.

running.strace is a strace of the ifdown command that is being initiated by
`/etc/init.d/networking stop` when ran while the system is in a normal up
condition.
shutdown.strace is the same strace but when the ifdown command is ran by
`/etc/init.d/networking stop` during the normal shutdown procedures triggered
by `/etc/rc6.d/S35networking`.

Could you please stop the server, start it up under manual control as
root with '/usr/sbin/sshd -ddd' (yes, you do need the full path ...),
attempt to connect to it with 'ssh -vvv', and attach the full debug logs
from both client and server? This should give rather more information
than is normally logged to auth.log.

[Bug 575458] [NEW] /etc/dhcp3/dhclient-exit-hooks.d/ntp breaks local NTP server (patch)

The dhcp exit hook for ntp removes *all* ntp servers from ntp.conf if
the dhcp server provides a new ntp host. This is generally good, unless

work the next time your computer starts without DHCP.

[Bug 536942] Re: --firstboot option broken in 0.12.2-0ubuntu3

2010-05-04 Thread Brian Adams
Attached is a patch that seems to fix the issue (and the same issue with
--firstlogin).

I've tested the patch in building a vm and debug indicates everything
goes fine, however I haven't had a chance to push a vm to VMWare and
confirm that everything functions as expected on that end.

If the issue is truly only the option being recognized however, it seems
this should work.

Hope this help!

-Brian

[Bug 575572] [NEW] Ospf6d aborts on start if 'ipv6 ospf6 advertise prefix-list' is applied to an interface

2010-05-04 Thread Sam Cannell
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: quagga

[Also submitted to Quagga's bugzilla
(https://bugzilla.quagga.net/show_bug.cgi?id=593) and the Debian bug
tracker (http://bugs.debian.org/580299) - this issue occurs on Debian
(lenny and squeeze), Ubuntu (lucid) and FreeBSD (8.0-STABLE with quagga
built from ports). I don't think it's the same as the similar-sounding
bug reported in bug#519488; that was applying a prefix-list to an area
definition and this bug occurs when attaching a prefix-list to an
interface. Additionally, in this bug the daemon is functional with the
new configuration until it's restarted, at which point it aborts.]

If an interface has been configured with the 'ipv6 ospf6 advertise prefix-list'
option, the ospf6 daemon will abort when it tries to start. The configuration
will, however, work fine until ospf6d is stopped:

ted:/etc/quagga # /usr/lib/quagga/ospf6d --daemon
ted:/etc/quagga # VTYSH_PAGER=cat vtysh -d ospf6d

Probably related - ospf6d will immediately abort if the 'ipv6 ospf6 advertise
prefix-list' option is applied to an interface that hasn't been assigned an
ospf area. Perhaps the configuration loader tries to apply the advertise
prefix-list before OSPF areas have been set up?
