There seems to be a problem with the apparmor profile of libvirt (see
bug #54579). After adding the line
/dev/ttyS* rw,
to /etc/apparmor.d/abstractions/libvirt-qemu and reloading the profile
it worked for me.

After reading the posted email thread, I've come to the conclusion that
the -boot argument is missdocumented/missleading. In actuality it's c
parameter is more like the boot from first or selected hard disk and
d would be boot from first or selected cdrom.
I think it would be best to remove this

Both Chris and I tested this. I run 2 loops:
* allocating and deallocating 200 devices;
* allocating and deallocating 513 devices.
Both worked as expected. We *did* see errors, but they are unrelated to
this bug (see bug 590929). As such, I consider this bug fixed.

The /etc/ld.so.preload file is used to list ELF shared libraries to be
loaded before the program, and this is part of the protection that
AppArmor provides. Allowing access to this file in the apparmor profile
would simply mean an additional (custom) library would need to be added
to the profile.
The example given returns the same result for me on an up to date
maverick system. I think the problem is just a misleading error message
bubbling up from openssl. s_client does give an error about the self
signed cert:
