De alguna forma, aun no se como, alguien robó mi identidad de mi cuenta
personal de gmail hoy domingo a la 1:13am y envió correo spam a todos mis
contactos. Lamento los inconvenientes, por favor borren cualquier correo que
les haya enviado entre la 1:00 am y las 3:20 am. :-/
The same error seems to still be there with version 5.0.1 which is the
default version available through synaptic as of 2010-08-22.

Just noticed I forgot to restart the various daemons after chaniging the
passwords.
My comment one hour ago is therefore false, bconsole can connect to director
with 5.0.1.

I found the real problem:
During the install, all of the directories are being created as owned by
root:root. Changing them to be owned by the backuppc ID eliminates the
failure:
