There are some troublesome segfaults in your dmesg, and one of those was dpkg-deb segfaulting on one of the packages being upgraded. Hopefully this doesn't mean there is a hardware error, but it might. Alas, the unfirewalled machine I was going to try on has now been taken away. I may be able to reproduce this using user-space qemu on a VM on a cluster, and will try that next week if I have to, but in the meantime: I'm planning to try to upload qemu-kvm 0.12.5 to the lucid-backports ppa in the next few days. In the meantime, I've placed it in my own ppa - it should be done building in a few hours. Could you try the kvm out of: https://launchpad.net/~serge-hallyn/+archive/lucid-kvm-test (when 0.12.5 shows itself as built) and see if you still reproduce the problem? If anyone has a link or list of them, please do post here, as I am a bit confused about how to interact with the user. console output seems a hacky way (user may not have console if ssh'ing in for instance). Hi Scott! I try to describe the problem, because I solved it yesterday midnight. This Ubuntu box Intel Atom 4 CPU 2G RAM 1 Tb HDD, is my router and firewall in home office. Not so important data and databases on this box. This dist uprage is 1'st try to upgrade from 9.04 to LTS again, and I will never try 1'st on alive system like my Web server with 30 domains DNS, and mail. OK step by step dist upgr. to 9.10 from 9.04 (on 9.04 all updated fully) OK, with small settings change work all. eg: DNS, fail2ban, iptables, apache2, forward, NAT, MySQL, postfix, denyhost, x-server, gnome, and many installed programs. make all to upgrade fully with 9.10 all is OK start dist upgr 9.10 to 10.04 LTS after 2 hours of downloads started the upgrade process (all in console gdm killed) many upgrades many qusetions, sometimes I leave my conf files, but 75% overwrited with dist conf, mysql too because nothing I changed in config. I see many many problems when the mysql-server try to configure in post install. More than 1 hour I wait for end. Killed them. All other dist upgrade is correctly ended. reboot upgrade all. remove --purge mysql and all packages with mysql word. install from scratch. The problem is again!! remove all install with synaptic with GUI process hung and in syslog see again the problems. remove all again. install with webmin. problems. Try and googled the problem and I found some with apparmor. Stop apparmor, and try again. No way. Scrambled. OK I killed all apparmor (because first i try to enable for mysql all - and not gone). reboot remove all with mysql step by step 1 by 1 with remove --purge. install from scratch on console and ALL IS OK!! THE problemis occured why? I dont use apparmor and profiles on 9.04 with 9.10 it is in stopped state BUT LUCID ! make a service ! and started apparmor WITHOUT QUESTION!! Why? why service or BUM (this utility is more than 3 hourd googled!!) I'm not tartar. Lucid and Boot Up idea (F..) ??? make me really sick. No promlems with MySQL, only with Lucid (sorry for word-pay) stupid service manager (like in M$ Jesus Crist!). Please help me how I can return to NORMAL But and shutdown state like on (mostly) all Linx. Small addition: I have other problems, won't autostart squid, bind9 (chrooted), mysql, sshd, samba !!! I spent most of today testing this. My first package (ppa1) was missing the euca_rootwrap configuration changes necessary to allow the new LVM commands used by the upstream package. The ppa2 package I just uploaded adds that and solves this problem. I'm happy with it so far. It has solve the problem for me, as far as I can tell. I have created/delete hundreds of volumes now and have not seen the failures I was seeing before. When testing out bug 586134 I found another issue and although similar
to bug 517086 appears not to be the same issue.
If you create for example 200 1GB volumes like this:
for i in `seq 1 200` ; do euca-create-volume -z cluster1 -s 1 ; done
You will end up with quite a few failed. If you look in the logs it is
usually caused by vgcreate failing for unknown reasons as the output of
the command is not logged. If you run the same command on the command
line that failed it will then work.
Also if you then delete all the volumes like this:
for i in `euca-describe-volumes | awk '{print $2}'` ; do euca-delete-
volume $i ; done
You will end up with a huge number that do not get removed. If you look
in the logs it is usually caused by lvremove failing for unknown reasons
like with vgcreate. Again if you run the same command on the command
line that failed it will then work.
Also despite the failure to properly delete the volume euca-describe-
volumes will have invalid information. For example if you delete the
volume it will no longer show up in the list but it will still be there
as seen by losetup and vgscan, and will still be set back up by
eucalyptus when rebooted but it will not show up in the euca-describe-
volume list.

euca-create-volume command. In the current packages, this command will fail
from time to time, for no apparent or reported reason, and Eucalyptus does not

UEC users will probably encounter at some point in time.

+ This bug has been addressed by the upstream Eucalyptus maintainer of this
code. The Eucalyptus 2.0 branch (in Maverick) does not suffer from this bug,
as much of the storage related code has been refactored in the interest of

changes necessary to address this bug. Still the patch is a few hundred lines.
But it's all in the interest of solving this bug.

Public bug reported: Binary package hint: vsftpd I am not sure what to put here other then I am running Ubuntu 10.04 on a laptop. Ubuntu stated that it failed to install the package except that the vsftpd server is running fine. I connected with out a problem. I even went into the config file and changed a setting then restarted the service. It appears to be running correctly. After making the change and restarting the service I connected locally from my desktop to the ftp server with no problems. Even transfered several files. Then I noticed the star shaped exclamation point on the task bar and now I am writing this.. Let me know if you need any more information such as specs of the machine. What I said above covers what I was doing/working on when the message appeared. [Bug 629236] [NEW] Can't install samba in 10.04.1 fresh install
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: samba I did a fresh install of Ubuntu 10.04.1 today on my girlfriend's computer and after installing everything she needed I tried to share a folder in the network. When it asked to install samba, a error ocurred mentioning a broken package. Trying to install the samba package via synaptic I saw what appears to be the error. The samba package I was trying to install was version 2:3.4.7~dfsg-1ubuntu3. It has as dependency samba-common and samba-common-bin =2:3.4.7~dfsg-1ubuntu3. But I have samba-common and samba-common-bin already installed in version 2:3.4.7~dfsg-1ubuntu3.1. I if choose to downgrade samba-common and samba-common-bin to version 2:3.4.7~dfsg-1ubuntu3, Synaptic says I need to uninstall smbclient, ubuntu-desktop and winbind (which I am not going to...) So I cannot install samba only because the version of the samba package is off by 1 digit. Updating the samba package or it's dependenies should solve it. Please don't let me down. [Bug 629242] [NEW] vmbuilder 0.12.4-0ubuntu fails to consider MAC address
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: python-vm-builder vmbuilder kvm ubuntu --mac=00:16:3e:10:34:31 builds a VM with resulting MAC 52:54:00:xx:xx:xx : a virsh dumpxml vm | grep address returns the latter address number, not the former. And the DHCP leases file reports the same number. If i provide the MAC address with hyphens instead of colons as separator, i get a malformed MAC address error from the preflight_check of post_install hook (like 25 mn in the game, out of 30 mn total, even though i have tmpfs= -), which indicates that the --mac parm was not completely ignored (just partly ?) (looking at /usr/share/pyshared/VMBuilder/plugins/network/__init__.py it looks like it expects colons and nothing else) I've tried enclosing the address in single quotes, just to be sure, but i get the same result. BTW, i invoke vmbuilder with the --verbose option, but do not get any report on any MAC address, just a general configure_networking hook running info msg. I have, in the [kvm] section of ~/.vmbuilder.cfg, bridge = br0, in case that matters.
