[Bug 666491] Re: dpkg does not trigger commit

2011-02-25 Thread Dave Walker
@Angel, I just tried to reproduce this issue and it seems some confusion
has been caused. The etckeeper package automatically commits when and
apt-get install/remove is performed on a package that modifies /etc/*.

The bug is looking for a commit when a raw dpkg command is performed,
such as dpkg -i *.deb.

Thanks.

[Bug 667269] Re: winbind crashes

2011-02-25 Thread gmoore777
Can we get some traction on this bug?

This problem still consistently occurs on at least 5 machines per week out of
our 80 machines.
Or throw me some ideas to either narrow down the problem further or
work-arounds.

I still feel that whatever winbind does to keep itself busy while being idle is
causing it to go into this unresponsive state.
Is it pinging our Active Directory server every X minutes and amassing a queue
of awaiting responses back?
Is it pinging DNS servers every X minutes, etc.
It must be doing something, other than just merely authenticating
a user when they log in. I think these background tasks is the core of the
problem.
I also can't believe no one is reporting this, unless we are the only
establishment using ActiveDirectory on Ubuntu.
Help, please.

[Bug 580319] Re: dhcp3-server launches before upstart brings all interface, thus failing to start

2011-02-25 Thread Clint Byrum
Seems to me that the appropriate time to start dhcpd is when all of the
devices it is configured on are up.

The issue here is that /etc/rc2.d/S* are run after this condition is
met:

start on filesystem and net-device-up IFACE=lo

Because ifup -a is run in parallel with mountall essentially this is a race
between ifup -a bringing up its interfaces and all filesystems mounting. It
probably works fine w/ a regular ethernet interface, but like the reporter
says, this takes a bit longer for a bridge.

We probably do need to move dhcp server to upstart, *or* rethink the
start on for rc-sysinit. In fact, since lo is always configured when
ifup -a is run, and 'started networking' is emitted after ifup -a exits
with success, it would make sense to change rc-sysinit to this:

start on filesystem and started networking

This would probably solve a lot of issues with server network services
that need all interfaces to be up and configured. On the desktop, this
could slow the boot by the time between emitting 'net-device-up' for lo
and ifup -a exitting.. which I would suspect is in the ballpark of a
few milliseconds at the most. However there are plenty of other things
happening in parallel at this point so its not a total loss.

This is a somewhat radical change, and probably not going to be SRU-
able. For the stable releases, it may be better for users to modify
/etc/init/rc-sysinit.conf themselves to enact this behavior now.

Adding upstart task since rc-sysinit.conf is owned by the upstart
package, and IMO, its running too soon.

[Bug 590201] Re: OpenSolaris (previously working) no longer boots: kernel panics early

I just installed and booted opensolaris with no problems under natty.

I'll try under maverick as well.

My cmdline was simply
   qemu-kvm -hda solaris.img -cdrom Downloads/opensolaris.iso -m 1024 -smp 2
-boot d -vnc :1
to install and
   qemu-kvm -hda solaris.img -boot c -m 1024 -smp 2 -vnc :1

[Bug 725170] [NEW] euca-authorize requires source-subnet to function

2011-02-25 Thread Scott Moser
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: euca2ools

using the ec2-api-tools, one can do something like:
 $ ec2-add-group --description=bar foogroup
 GROUP   foogroup bar
 $ ec2-authorize foogroup -p 22
 GROUP   foogroup
 PERMISSION foogroup ALLOWS tcp 22 22 FROM CIDR 0.0.0.0/0
 $ ec2-describe-group foogroup
 GROUP 950047163771   foogroup bar
 PERMISSION 950047163771 foogroup ALLOWS tcp 22 22 FROM CIDR 0.0.0.0/0

Using euca2ools, the same looks like this:
 $ euca-add-group --description=bar foogroup
 GROUP foogroup bar
 $ euca-authorize foogroup -p 22
 foogroup None None tcp 22 22 None
 GROUP foogroup
 PERMISSION foogroup ALLOWS tcp 22 22
 $ echo $?
 0
 $ euca-describe-groups
 GROUP   950047163771   foogroup bar

Note 2 things there, a.) the command returned success b.) it did not do
anything. There is no PERMISSIOn rule now as there should be.

However, if we supply a -s/--source-subnet flag, then it works as
expected:

 $ euca-authorize foogroup -p 22 --source-subnet 0.0.0.0/0
 foogroup None None tcp 22 22 0.0.0.0/0
 GROUP foogroup
 PERMISSION foogroup ALLOWS tcp 22 22 FROM CIDR 0.0.0.0/0
 $ euca-describe-groups foogroup
 GROUP   950047163771   foogroup bar
 PERMISSION 950047163771 foogroup ALLOWS tcp 22 22 FROM CIDR 0.0.0.0/0

I think all that is really needed is to use '0.0.0.0/0' as the source-subnet if
one is not supplied.

[Bug 725209] [NEW] bind9 not honoring function of /var/cache

2011-02-25 Thread m00dawg
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: bind9

According to the Linux FS standard
(http://www.pathname.com/fhs/pub/fhs-2.3.html#VARCACHEAPPLICATIONCACHEDATA),
applications must be able to regenerate or restore the data within
/var/cache. The problem is that, if /var/cache/bind does not exist,
instead of creating the directory, bind refuses to start. This poses a
problem for systems which are using tmpfs to limit the amount of
accesses to disk (such as when running the OS on a small CompactFlash
card where writes need be limited).

The init script would likely be used to fix this by testing if the
directory exists and, if not, simply creating it.

1)
root@filedawg:/etc/bind# lsb_release -rd
Description:Ubuntu 10.10
Release:10.10

2)
root@filedawg:/etc/bind# apt-cache policy bind9
bind9:
  Installed: 1:9.7.1.dfsg.P2-2
  Candidate: 1:9.7.1.dfsg.P2-2
  Version table:
 *** 1:9.7.1.dfsg.P2-2 0
500 http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ maverick/main i386 Packages
100 /var/lib/dpkg/status

3) Bind starts via init script and creates /var/cache/bind if it does
not exists

4) Bind fails to start because /var/cache/bind does not exists,
violating the Linux FHS.

[Bug 473332] Re: Startup failed to load ipmi_devintf module

2011-02-25 Thread Raubvogel
Serge,

NVM, I tested in 10.10 and they work. /etc/default/openipmi is created
and /etc/init.d/openipmi correctly points to /etc/default/openipmi and
/var/lock/ipmi.

So, looks like a winner to me.

Thanks!

Re: [Bug 725170] Re: euca-authorize requires source-subnet to function

2011-02-25 Thread Mitch Garnaat
Thanks. I'll merge this in on my side.

Where are you guys with the Natty release? Is that imminent? I've been
working on lots of changes to euca2ools. Refactoring the code, adding
support for things like tags and filters, fixing lots of long-standing bugs,
etc. I suspect all of this is much too late for natty but just wanted to
give you a heads up. I'll probably be merging these changes to our
euca2ools-main sometime over the next two weeks.

 Title:
  euca-authorize requires source-subnet to function

 Status in Euca2ools:
   Confirmed
 Status in “euca2ools” package in Ubuntu:
  Fix Released

 Bug description:
  Binary package hint: euca2ools

  using the ec2-api-tools, one can do something like:
   $ ec2-add-group --description=bar foogroup
   GROUP   foogroup bar
   $ ec2-authorize foogroup -p 22
   GROUP   foogroup
   PERMISSION foogroup ALLOWS tcp 22 22 FROM CIDR 0.0.0.0/0
   $ ec2-describe-group foogroup
   GROUP 950047163771   foogroup bar
   PERMISSION 950047163771 foogroup ALLOWS tcp 22 22 FROM CIDR
 0.0.0.0/0

  Using euca2ools, the same looks like this:
   $ euca-add-group --description=bar foogroup
   GROUP foogroup bar
   $ euca-authorize foogroup -p 22
   foogroup None None tcp 22 22 None
   GROUP foogroup
   PERMISSION foogroup ALLOWS tcp 22 22
   $ echo $?
   0
   $ euca-describe-groups
   GROUP   950047163771   foogroup bar

  Note 2 things there, a.) the command returned success b.) it did not
  do anything. There is no PERMISSIOn rule now as there should be.

  However, if we supply a -s/--source-subnet flag, then it works as
  expected:

   $ euca-authorize foogroup -p 22 --source-subnet 0.0.0.0/0
   foogroup None None tcp 22 22 0.0.0.0/0
   GROUP foogroup
   PERMISSION foogroup ALLOWS tcp 22 22 FROM CIDR 0.0.0.0/0
   $ euca-describe-groups foogroup
   GROUP   950047163771   foogroup bar
   PERMISSION 950047163771 foogroup ALLOWS tcp 22 22 FROM CIDR
 0.0.0.0/0

  I think all that is really needed is to use '0.0.0.0/0' as the
 source-subnet if one is not supplied.

[Bug 687535] Re: upstart loses track of ssh daemon after reload ssh

2011-02-25 Thread Mark Goris
We did as described above, and the log files did not yield any helpful
information. My next step is to revert back to openssh_5.3p1-3ubuntu4,
since that seemed to be reliable.

As for the fact that this didn't show up in any testing prior to
committing the patch, I would point out that, just like Jan above, our
instances are running as Xen guests (since we're running in EC2). So
perhaps that has something to do with it.

I can't tell from the bug comments, but I'm curious as to whether or not
these sort of changes get tested in a Xen based environment. My guess
is that their not, at least not consistently.

minor upgrade and .0 releases are historically problematic anyway.

Amending my comment #9. This appears to qualify as micro-version release
per https://wiki.ubuntu.com/StableReleaseUpdates/MicroReleaseExceptions
and thus needs to be approved by the technical board for the criteria.

Given the number of changes in the code, I think it would be a bad idea to
try to incorporate it in natty at this point in time. The old code has it's
warts but it's been pretty thoroughly ironed out by now, I think. I did
start my refactoring from the very latest euca2ools-main code so all of the
changes (like copying volume labels, etc.) are in the refactored code.

I'm not sure but it certainly could be and should be. I'm not really sure
how the push to LP happens but I'll check to see if we could push this
branch to a dev branch on launchpad. Or, maybe I can just do that manually

[Bug 725312] [NEW] package dovecot-common 1:1.2.9-1ubuntu6.3 failed to install/upgrade: subprocess installed post-installation script returned error exit status 1

2011-02-25 Thread Ian Hess
Public bug reported:

Just following the instructions to set up an email server using 10.04 LTS...
Entered the command 'sudo apt-get install dovecot-imapd dovecot-pop3d' to see
numerous failures. Postfix seems to work using telnet but 'cause I don't know
what's what right now it is difficult to help with the problem report. Sorry
folks!
The machine has limited memory (~0.63G) which I suspect might be an issue.
Synaptic shows various dovecot elements installed including -common. So this
might simply be an exception handling event to manage the previous installation.
