I've done some further investigation into this issue. maverick exhibits the same symptoms as lucid; i.e. if the 127.0.0.1 address is not bound ntp exits on startup. natty appears to deal with this scenario OK; removing 127.0.0.1 in a post-up step does not impact ntp. Output from running ntpd -n on a maverick host with no ipv4 enabled including localhost. I still have this problem on a hardy (8.04 x64) machine. All servers that were upgraded to lucid (10.04 x64) were fixed until the latest update. I have to manually restart winbind, which takes seconds but is an inconvenience and requires me to be around to do it. I tried a cron to restart winbind every so often but it didn't work. It always occurs in the morning as more people attempt to log in. Hi Stephane, Thank you for reporting bus and trying to make Ubuntu Server better. Starting from maverick, the drbd-source package was dropped due to the reason you are mentioning above (the drbd kernel module is now in mainline). Now, I believe that backporting new drbd-utils into lucid is not an option because that would mean dropping the drbd-source, which installs the kernel module with DKMS. In case someone installs the backported drbd on a lucid kernel, then, they won't really have the DRBD kernel and will make the package useless. Now, maybe the best approach would be to provide PPA's with drbd8-utils for those kernels in lucid. For now I'm marking this bug as Opinion as I'd like to get further input on this. I am currently having this issue, but it might not be an ntp bug, but rather a kernel bug. If you assign an IPv6 address to a virtual device composed of real sub-devices (e.g. to a bonding or bridge interface), the address will be wrongly detected as duplicate (marked as tentative dadfailed). See https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=503082 And this triggers the ntp messages because apparently ntp tries and fails to bind to the interface with the problematic address. I'm on a machine with 10 IP addresses and have to use something like start on (filesystem and net-device-up IFACE=venet0:8) in squid.conf and ssh.conf.
