Here's a prospective patch for this issue.  I'm currently discussing it
with the Debian maintainers and upstream; it holds up in my testing
(running the upstream 'virtuosobackendtest' test suite), so I'm
reasonably confident we have a winner here.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better.

racoon 0.8 is available in the current (non-LTS) release, Oneiric, and
will also be in the upcoming LTS release.

 The suggested correction is to update racoon to version 0.8.

I understand that this issue is present in the current LTS release
(10.04) and thus it is desirable to get this fixed. But we do not update
packages in stable releases to new upstream versions in this way, in
order to keep them stable. Instead, bugfixes need to be backported. See
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/StableReleaseUpdates for reasons and the details
of this process.

If this particular fix can be isolated then it can be fixed in an SRU
(https://wiki.ubuntu.com/StableReleaseUpdates#Procedure). So if you
could supply a minimal patch that fixes the issue in the current version
in Lucid, then this would help.

Alternatively you can update to the current (non-LTS) release 11.10, or
update to the upcoming LTS (due for release in April).

VarLogDistupgradeTermlog looks corrupt to me. For example, line 5445 has
come out of line 5429. It looks like gzip has errored during
compression. I may be mistaken but I think this has probably been caused
by faulty hardware. As such I'm marking the bug as Invalid, but please
do comment and reopen if you disagree.

Seems it's a mistake in /etc/apparmor.d/usr.bin.lxc-start
Don't know how to fix it, but if you want to make lxc work quickly (without 
apparmor):
ln -s /etc/apparmor.d/usr.bin.lxc-start 
/etc/apparmor.d/disable/usr.bin.lxc-start
service apparmor restart

I'm happy to update our apparmor profile as soon as apparmor stops
crashing :)

For now, the only way I found to get containers working again is to turn

the other hand there *is* a workaround, so I guess the priority should
be dropped...  But I'll leave that to you.

it to me and push a package with the apparmor policy temporarily
disabled.

The postinstall script supposed to detect if the system is running
upstart or not with the following code:

This seems wrong to me as an upstart job description could be installed
even if the system by itself is not running upstart and the user could
switch to an other init system without re-runnung the pkg configure

It sounds like temporarily disabling the apparmor profile (in the
package) is the way to go.

I pushed a minimal change to LXC disabling the apparmor profile for now.
Instead of removing the profile or using aa-disable I simply changed the path 
to /usr/bin/lxc-start to /usr/bin/lxc-start.disabled in the profile, whenever 
apparmor is fixed we'll just need to add the mount statements, bump the 
apparmor dependency and revert that one line change.

The build system depends on a certain naming scheme of the rom images.
The basename of the rom file (e.g. rtl8139.rom - rtl8139) must be
defined in the drivers PCI_ROM or ISA_ROM makro. For the rtl8139 driver
this is correctly done:

PCI_ROM(0x10ec, 0x8139, rtl8139,   Realtek 8139, 0)

However at least the ne2k_isa and the e1000_82540 drivers are not
behaving well:

ISA_ROM(ne,NE1000/2000 and clones);

The KVM roms to be build use the name of the driver's C file. This does
unfortunately end in a successful build but with vendor and device id of
0 coded into the rom images.

This seems to be no problem for KVM (so for ipxe it might be lower
priority) but the Xen hvmloader is build in such a way that the roms
from the kvm-ipxe binary package are used and then included in a way
that on boot a matching rom is search by pci id of the card. This fails
for e1000 because of this bug.

The postfix package distributes a main.cf configuration file that refers
to localhost in at least one of the parameter settings. Instead, it
should use localhost's IP address (127.0.0.1), because postfix might not
be able to resolve localhost even though it is defined in /etc/hosts.
I had this problem on my server, I gave up figuring out how to solve the
problem, and finally edited the config file and the problem went away. I
suppose it has something to do with nsswitch.conf, and whether localhost
is resolved by the nameserver, etc. etc. But I could not figure out what
the problem was.

Nevertheless, it is a bug, since postfix' configuration ought to be
independent of the particular setup of a server. Using 127.0.0.1 is
bulletproof.

For example:

  content_filter = smtp-amavis:[localhost]:10024

should be:

  content_filter = smtp-amavis:[127.0.0.1]:10024

This has been happening at least since 11.10 on several different computers.
Whenever I start an LXC, it changes the volume of the host computer. Sometimes 
it turns it up, sometimes down.
It's quite puzzling  :)

Now that dh-apparmor is a separate package, packages in 12.04 and later
that use dh_apparmor should Build-Depends on dh-apparmor so we can drop
the Depends delta in debhelper. I will be adding tasks for all packages
that still lack a Build-Depends on dh-apparmor. Note that dh-apparmor
now exists in Debian, so any AppArmor deltas can be applied to Debian.

I grepped the archive and came up with the list of packages in this bug.
I have taken the liberty of already fixing evince, isc-dhcp, ntp,
rsyslog and tcpdump.

I agree that if this is expected behaviour then it should be documented
more clearly - specifically in the Directory section as well as the
DirectoryMatch section.

I'm reluctant to suggest a change in Ubuntu for this, unless the
upstream Apache project who develop the software also carry the fix,
because I'm not absolutely certain that I'm correct. They may say that
I'm wrong, or that Ubuntu's behaviour is incorrect in this regard.

If you'd like to take this further, the best place would be on the
Apache HTTP Server mailing lists (http://httpd.apache.org/lists.html) or
upstream bug tracker (http://httpd.apache.org/bug_report.html). They
will be able to verify for certain whether this is expected behaviour or
a bug.

The first thing to do would be to ask them if this is expected behaviour
or a bug. You should point them to this bug that you have filed here,
and also comment in here to link to your report upstream.

This is due to the container running udevadm trigger --action=add.
Those events also get sent to the host, causing some hardware to be
reset.  For me, in addition to sound levels being reset, my keyboard
bindings are also reset.

This won't happen with a Precise guest as it won't run udev.  At the
next UDS we intend to discuss a design for a devices namespace to avoid
this.

Johannes- The bug is that it does not route anywhere.  AFAICS, its in
the list (with the rest of the versions reported) to maintain ec2
compatibility.  In fat, I came across the issue when testing a tool
designed for EC2 on nova.
