[Bug 997978] Re: KVM images lose connectivity with bridged network

2012-06-28 Thread Stephane Neveu
@Serge

I did upgrade my kernels yesterday evening both on hypervisors and guests so
now I'm running 3.2.0-25-generic on hosts and the same kernel version but
virtual for VMs. Same problem today morning, some VMs dropped out. I'm actually
using virtio everywhere. I'll try to test another one and keep you in touch
asap.
I also tried to run a VMs with the generic kernel (not the virtual one) and I'm
facing the same issue.
Serge as I'm building this new plateform I can say they there is no traffic at
all on my VMs exept 2 guys testing some java stuffs. I almost thinking that VMs
drop out when there is not enough traffic on nics...

I'll keep you in touch.

[Bug 231060] Re: packages dnsmasq and libvirt-bin conflict with each other

2012-06-28 Thread Thomas Hood
From the IRC discussion:

23:01 RAOF stgraber: I don't suppose there's a way to get the best of both
worlds? Have dnsmasq ignore the interfaces you need, *and* pick up new
interfaces?
23:01 RAOF For example: how disruptive is restarting dnsmasq?

Please note that Simon Kelley is working on enhancing dnsmasq so that it
will automatically detect new interfaces and addresses (on LInux,
anyway). That's much better than restarting dnsmasq. Once that
enhancement is available, forcing dnsmasq into bind-interfaces mode will
be less disruptive.

Forcing dnsmasq into bind-interfaces mode now is disruptive, but not
terribly so; stgraber argues (persuasively, IMHO) that libvirt and lxc
should force standalone dnsmasq into bind-interfaces mode even without
the aforemention enhancement.

[Bug 231060] Re: packages dnsmasq and libvirt-bin conflict with each other

2012-06-28 Thread Thomas Hood
(Cont'd.) Simon Kelley on enhancing dnsmasq and subsequent discussion in
bug #959037 comment #89 (e.g.).

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/dnsmasq/+bug/959037/comments/89

In the same bug report we discuss various ways of getting
NetworkManager-controlled dnsmasq (nm-dnsmasq) and standalone dnsmasq
to coexist. The best solution we've found so far also entails forcing
standalone dnsmasq into bind-interfaces mode; beyond that it entails
changing nm-dnsmasq's listen address to 127.0.0.2. Again, once dnsmasq
is enhanced the inconveniences of bind-interfaces mode should be largely
eliminated.

[Bug 959037] Re: NM-controlled dnsmasq prevents other DNS servers from starting

2012-06-28 Thread Thomas Hood
Simon wrote:
change --bind-interfaces to --bind-dynamic as see how it goes.

As discussed in bug #928524 and bug #231060 various packages will be
including files in /etc/dnsmasq.d/ with bind-interfaces. I guess
these will all later have to be changed to include bind-dynamic
instead, unless dynamic binding becomes the default behavior in bind-
interfaces mode.

[Bug 959037] Re: NM-controlled dnsmasq prevents other DNS servers from starting

2012-06-28 Thread Thomas Hood
In bug #928524 Stéphane Graber has written that even if Network Manager
moves to using 127.0.0.2, which I believe is a good idea, it should
still ship a dnsmasq.d config file containing 'bind-interfaces' So
I gather that Stéphane doesn't necessarily disagree with what has been
proposed here (last summarized in comment #88).

[Bug 1010514] Re: Source group based security group rule without protocol and port causes failures

2012-06-28 Thread Thierry Carrez
@Mike: the security advisory pointed at the patch you can apply to
Diablo to fix this issue. The stable/diablo branch is maintained by a
subgroup of people interested in maintaining that stable branch, we
can't wait for them to formally accept the patch in the branch before
releasing the advisory and ending the embargo, which by nature is
limited.

That said, I pinged them again so that they would approve it :)

Serge,

ne2k_pci seems to drop the link when generating some traffic (only tested on 4

e1000 seems have to same problem as virtio, dropping connections without
traffic ...
What else may I try ? Is it really a driver issue ?

[Bug 997978] Re: KVM images lose connectivity with bridged network

2012-06-28 Thread Stephane Neveu
I've noticed I never had such a problem on one host running 3.2.0-24-generic
... on this one, my VMs have only 2 vnet per VM whereas on others I have at
least 4 vnet per VM.

Is there a tap generation limit somewhere ? (I don't think so, I do not see
such a thing in sysctl -a)
I'll try to downgrade my kernel on one buggy host while waiting for some
ideas...

I don't believe so. While it'll definately be great to have dnsmasq

[Bug 997978] Re: KVM images lose connectivity with bridged network

2012-06-28 Thread Serge Hallyn
@Stephane,

can you show your host network configuration and a VM's xml? Are you
bridging the VM nics with the host's eth0 over your own br0, or are you
using the default NATed virbr0? Does this happen even when only a
single VM is up?

I will try to reproduce next week.

(For host network configuration, the results of :
   sudo ifconfig -a
   sudo brctl show
   netstat -nr
   virsh net-dumpxml
should suffice, and 'virsh dumpxml VM1' to show the xml configuration for a
guest)

By systematically do you mean every time, or every N times?

have any advice how to troubleshoot it ?

A few things may help,

1. install the qemu-user-static-dbg package (may make the coredump more
meaningful)
2. set your core limit (ulimit -c 999)
3. re-run
4. post the resulting coredump here
5. look in syslog for the segfault information (two lines) and post them here

I should be able to use that info to at least find where in the qemu source the
fault is happening.

[Bug 993291] Re: [SRU] package nis 3.17-32ubuntu1.2 failed to install/upgrade: invoke-rc.d: unknown initscript, /etc/init.d/nis not found.

2012-06-28 Thread Brian Murray
Hello Sean, or anyone else affected,

Accepted nis into precise-proposed. The package will build now and be
available at http://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/nis/3.17-32ubuntu4.1 in
a few hours and then in the -proposed repository. Please help us by
testing this new package. See
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Testing/EnableProposed for documentation how to
enable and use -proposed. Your feedback will aid us getting this update
out to other Ubuntu users.

If this package fixes the bug for you please change the bug tag from
verification-needed to verification-done. If it does not, change the
tag to verification-failed. In either case details of your testing will
help us make a better decision. Further information regarding the
verification process can be found at
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/QATeam/PerformingSRUVerification . Thank you in
advance!

[Bug 727837] Re: dhcp3-server fails to drop privileges properly

2012-06-28 Thread Stéphane Graber
For quantal I'll simply start using --enable-paranoia, introduced
upstream with 4.1 that adds support for -user and -group to dhcpd.

I confirmed with the testcase above that groups is properly set using
that option.

Thanks Stéphane,

This isn't a security flaw per se requiring a CVE. If you have something
to SRU in previous releases, you can include this, else we'll bundle it
next time we do have a security issue to fix.

[Bug 1018554] [NEW] write timestamp to console on halt/reboot/shutdown

2012-06-28 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

In EC2 and other cloud platforms, the console data is programmatically
available.

Our tests in EC2 collect this console output on shutdown / reboot
/terminate. The data is very useful.

in cloud-init i've added timestamps to output so that information is available
in the console log.
One thing missing (which cloud-init has no hooks for) is 'shutdown' or 'reboot'.

I'd like for upstart to write a message to /dev/console saying:
 rebooting Wed, 27 Jun 2012 15:52:45 -0400

or something like that.
I'd be happy if the 'nih_info' messages in util/reboot.c
had at timestamp on them, and got written to /dev/console by default (they do
not seem to).

ProblemType: Bug
DistroRelease: Ubuntu 12.10

[Bug 1018554] Re: write timestamp to console on halt/reboot/shutdown

2012-06-28 Thread Scott Moser
I chatted a bit with james, and he also said:
smoser woudl it be possible to have a single job that fired on halt,
poweroff, reboot?
jodh that job will fire on halt/poweroff/reboot already.
jodh console output prolly makes more sense, yeah, so just drop the
redirection.
smoser so if it runs on halt/poweroff/reboot, is there a way that i can
determine which?
jodh yes - the RUNLEVEL variable in that job will be set to 0, 1, or 6. See
man 7 runlevel for details
jodh bear in mind that the job needs to be quick as if things take too long
on shutdown, they get killed of course.

So, i suggest we just add this to cloud-init ubuntu packaging.

[Bug 613999] Re: openvpn is started after samba (smbd, nmbd)

2012-06-28 Thread Stéphane Graber
Mark as Invalid for ifupdown as I don't see what we can do here to help
that kind of corner case.

If this is indeed a common use case (and I doubt it's), it might be
worth updating samba to ship a job (or ifupdown hook) reloading the
service when a new interface is brought up.

Alternatively, once openvpn is ported to upstart (if that hasn't been
done yet), it should be possible for the system administrator to simply
add a condition to samba (and net-device-up=tap0 or similar).

DistroRelease: Ubuntu Quantal Alpha 1
Package: open-vm-dkms 2011.12.20-562307-0ubuntu2

When attempting to install the packaging on a clean machine (which I did
to see if the kernel built properly, I doubt it) it fails to download or
install (I'm installing open-vm-tools, open-vm-toolbox, and open-vm-
dkms).

Here's what I'm getting when I install through Terminal:
The following packages have unmet dependencies:
open-vm-dkms : Depends: dkms but it is not going to be installed

Through Synaptic:
Wants me to uninstall/remove a couple dozen packages (unity, xserver, checkbox,
etc)

This is happening even if I have quantal-proposed checked or not.

Using my packaging (aka the stuff I've been trying get into the Quantal
Repo for the last month or so), which was rebuilt within the last day
(to build against the newer procps), installs without issues.

Debian? If the bug exists in Debian, I think that would be the
appropriate venue for a fix.

This bug affects me as well, is it related to the one discussed here

I will try using the vhost_net driver in the host and vhost=on as a
guest parameter to see if it bypasses the issue.

2012-06-28 Thread Robie Basak
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make

I failed to reproduce this using:

bind9 1:9.8.1.dfsg.P1-4

bind9 1:9.8.1.dfsg.P1-4ubuntu0.1

one ISP?

[Bug 894608] Re: Implementing a bridge slows 10G network

2012-06-28 Thread Stéphane Graber
Marking it invalid against bridge-utils as the tool used to setup the bridge
isn't the problem, it's most likely either a kernel bug or a configuration
problem.
I personally reproduce similar bottlenecks in the past and Simon's suggestion
usually helps quite a lot (if CPU bound).

[Bug 1010514] Re: Source group based security group rule without protocol and port causes failures

2012-06-28 Thread Adam Gandelman
Please find the attached Jenkins job results from the Ubuntu Server Team's CI
infrastructure. As part of the verification process for this bug, Nova has
been deployed and configured across multiple nodes using precise-proposed as
an installation source. After successful bring-up and configuration of the
cluster, a number of exercises and smoke tests have be invoked to ensure the
updated package did not introduce any regressions. A number of test iterations
were carried out to catch any possible transient errors.

Note the list of installed packages at the top and bottom of the report.

For records of upstream test coverage of this update, please see the
Jenkins links in the comments of the relevant upstream code-review:
