I'm not sure which package should I choose for this bug, but I found some
similar issue with lxc chosen, so I just use lxc first here.

[Bug 1053893] [NEW] cloud-init should be able to switch off password auth in sshd

2012-09-21 Thread Neil Wilson
Public bug reported:

I've had a look but I can't see any facilities within cloud-init config
system to manipulate the sshd configuration settings.

ISTM that cloud-init should open up sshd to the minimum required by the
users configured by the cloud-init process (or if told to widen it
further).

So password auth should be off unless passwords are specified. key auth
should be off unless keys are retrieved, possibly sshd should not even
be started if there are no users, etc.

At the moment the image I'm generating has password auth switched off in
the default config, but obviously that means if somebody specifies a
passworded user in the cloud-init config, then it won't work.

As an aside is there a general move to do all the 'cloud specific
config' within cloud-init rather than in the image build?

[Bug 617463] Re: mysql fails to load innodb plugin due to apparmor rejection.

2012-09-21 Thread Stefano Rivera
** Description changed:

+ == SRU Stuff ==
+
+ === Impact ===
+ The HA innodb plugin can't be used, as the apparmor rules don't allow access
to the plugin directory.
+
+ === Regression potential ===
+ Minimal. When this rule was added in maverick, it went through a few
iterations:
+ 5.1.49-1ubuntu5, 5.1.49-1ubuntu6, and 5.1.49-1ubuntu7.
+ But it hasn't been changed since, so we can assume it isn't too problematic.
+
+ === Test Case ===
+
+ Install mysql-server. Stop it.
+
+ Add the following to a [mysqld] block in my.cnf:
+
+ ignore_builtin_innodb
+
plugin-load=innodb=ha_innodb_plugin.so;innodb_trx=ha_innodb_plugin.so;innodb_locks=ha_innodb_plugin.so;innodb_lock_waits=ha_innodb_plugin.so;innodb_cmp=ha_innodb_plugin.so;innodb_cmp_reset=ha_innodb_plugin.so;innodb_cmpmem=ha_innodb_plugin.so;innodb_cmpmem_reset=ha_innodb_plugin.so
+
+ Then mysql won't start, reporting that it can't load the innodb plugin.
+ If it starts, we've solved the problem.
+
+ == Original Report ==
+
Attempting to run the mysql testsuite fails with the apparmor policy as
shipped in maverick with the following rejection:

  [72565.740926] type=1400 audit(1281713173.741:61): apparmor=DENIED
  operation=file_mmap parent=18416 profile=/usr/sbin/mysqld
  name=/usr/lib/mysql/plugin/ha_innodb_plugin.so.0.0.0 pid=18417
  comm=mysqld requested_mask=m denied_mask=m fsuid=1000 ouid=0

The following needs to be added to the apparmor profile for mysqld:

- /usr/lib/mysql/plugin/*.so* m,
+   /usr/lib/mysql/plugin/*.so* m,

This also may be an issue on lucid, though I haven't built a version of
mysql there with the fix for bug 617461 to reproduce it.

[Bug 1053892] Re: failed to install quantal-core-armhf_default(20120921): some packages(mountall:amd64, upstart:amd64, iproute:amd64) have have unmet dependencies

2012-09-21 Thread Colin Watson
Very unlikely to be lxc. I'm just moving this to Ubuntu for now so that
it gets off the server team's list.

This could well be transient, since multiarch routinely gets upset
during development cycles while packages are out of sync; this isn't a
problem after release. Still needs investigation to confirm that
though.

[Bug 423252] Re: NSS using LDAP+SSL breaks setuid applications like su, sudo, apache2 suexec, and atd

2012-09-21 Thread Adam Stokes
After reviewing this bug again I've outlined a possible course of
action:

a) Revert global_init patch in all supported distro's
b) Lucid users continue to use the nscd workaround.
c) Precise, Quantal, etc - rebuild gnutls without --with-libgcrypt in order to
make use of nettle.

Unfortunately, the version of gnutls in Lucid is older than the required
gnutls version for nettle support. So I do not believe there will be
much that we can do as far as a supportable option is concerned.

I will need to speak with some other engineers about getting option c
pushed through[1].

[Bug 1054129] [NEW] reboot with -vga cirrus can result in broken output

2012-09-21 Thread Serge Hallyn
Public bug reported:

plars discovered that after doing do-release-upgrade -d from a precise
server image can result in what appears to be a frozen system. Input to
the console works fine (you can log in and do things, and you can also
ssh in if ssh-server was installed) but you see no output. jibel
discovered that -vga std does not have this bug.

This could be a bug in the cirrus driver in quantal, or a bug in the vnc
output in qemu-kvm, so I'm marking it against both.

[Bug 423252] Re: NSS using LDAP+SSL breaks setuid applications like su, sudo, apache2 suexec, and atd

2012-09-21 Thread Howard Chu
Forcing use of nscd is a non-starter at many sites. Aside from cache
staleness issues, and nscd's well known instability, there's also the
issue that nscd doesn't intercept get*ent enumerations so things will
still crash depending on which nsswitch functions an app calls.

It would make sense to use nettle on the newer releases that support it,
but keep the patch in place otherwise.

I'd like to complement the launchpad and apport folks for greatly
improving the command-line-server usage of apport-collect (since lucid

l3-agent: move check if ext-net bridge exists within daemon loop

bug 1052522

the l3 agent checked if the external network bridge exists in its
constructor, raising an uncaught exception if it did not. this does not
make much sense when running the l3-agent as a deamon, especially since
it can be the case that the l3-agent starts before open vswitch.

Public bug reported:

I have a Testing Virtual Machine Host running with Ubuntu 12.04 LTS
Server x64.

It has been running stable since the day after the release of Ubuntu
12.04 when it was installed.

Today i discovered that all the virtual machines were in a paused state.

When i try to resume them with libvirt resume domain they startup and
go into paused state a few seconds later.

I can't find any errors on libvirt log, domain log or dmesg.

Would appreciate some help debugging and solving the problem.

After talking this through with a few folks, it looks like this may be

environments.yaml makes the problem go away.

The issue remains in the stock version of juju for precise.

[Bug 1054188] Re: KVM Virtual Machines go into paused a few seconds after starting up

2012-09-21 Thread Márcio Santos
Solved...

Your comment about hard disc space made me wonder if maybe it could be
some problem with the filesystem on the partition.

A quick sudo e2fsck -f /dev/scd1 found some corrupt inodes that were
fixed and the problem went away.

All the virtual machines are running happily again, or so it seems.

Thanks for all your help, Serge.

Kind regards.

[Bug 1045947] Re: lxc-net should not masquarade intra-container traffic

2012-09-21 Thread Serge Hallyn
** Description changed:

As pointed out in the lxc mailing list, the iptables rule used by lxc-
net causes traffic between containers to be NAT'ed. Fix this by adding
  '! -d ${LXC_NETWORK}' to the iptables -A rule.
+
+
+ SRU Justification:
+ 1. Impact: traffic between containers on the same host is NATed
+ 2. Development fix: update iptables rule to not NAT traffic between containers
+ 3. Stable fix: same as development fix
+ 4. Test case: create and run two containers on the same host. Do a 'tcpdump
-ni eth0' from container 1 while container 2 is pinging container 1. With the
fix, the source address should be from the container's address, not from
10.0.3.1 (the bridge address).
+ 5. Regression potential: none.

[Blueprint servercloud-q-apt-improvements] Apt Improvements

2012-09-21 Thread Antonio Rosales

Whiteboard changed:
  Etherpad: http://pad.ubuntu.com/uds-q-servercloud-q-apt-improvements
  Blueprint:
https://blueprints.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+spec/servercloud-q-apt-improvements
  Proposed spec: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/AptByHash
  Discussion:
https://lists.ubuntu.com/archives/ubuntu-devel/2012-July/035487.html

  = User Stories =
   * Jim is using JuJu, and adds a node. He does not want to see apt fail due
to a race condition.
   * Marley is using the Ubuntu installer for network based installs against a
local mirror that is updated from a remote mirror. He does not want installs
to fail due to the mirror being updated.
   * Sally wants to use a http proxy to cache deb downloads and does not want
to be vulnerable to caching mismatched files that would cause apt failures.

  = Assumptions =
  None

  = Test Plans =
Test will be conducted in 2 ways:
a.) implied test: much of our automated infrastructure relies on apt and
previously failed quite commonly due to apt. These errors should be erased.
b.) explicit test: we should ideally have some canary that would ensure our
public mirrors do not fail. One example starting point is [1]
     [1] https://code.launchpad.net/~smoser/+junk/check-archive/

  = Release Note =
Ubuntu's public mirrors now contain an improved archive format. Coupled with
updates to apt transient apt-update errors are a thing of the past.

Note: feature freeze is upon us, and I think this work is too invasive
for an FFe. My priorities mean that I can't work on this for the next
few weeks, so it looks like this will have to slip to R. --racb

[Blueprint servercloud-q-cloud-images] Ubuntu Cloud Images Roundtable

2012-09-21 Thread Antonio Rosales
Blueprint changed by Antonio Rosales:

Whiteboard changed:
  Etherpad: http://pad.ubuntu.com/uds-q-servercloud-q-cloud-images
  Blueprint:
https://blueprints.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+spec/servercloud-q-cloud-images

Note, related blueprint (cloud-init, cloud-utils) at

https://blueprints.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+spec/servercloud-q-cloud-init-utils

  General Cloud Image improvements.
Discussion of improvement and enhancements to the Cloud Images and Cloud-Init
  1. Publication of EBS Rescue volumes
  2. Improving methods for users to find official EC2 AMI ids
Places that Ubuntu AMIs are listed currently:
Action: Default should show the latest, EBS boot, 64-bit, us-east-1
with easy Launch button to start AWS console
     Action: Check-box interface/Work on UI
     Action: Add link to cloud-images.ubuntu.com
   - http://cloud-images.ubuntu.com/
     Action: Add launch button
Action: Link from other AMI listings to preferred start page
     Action: Add links Quickstarts

Make it easier for people to find the official AMI's
   3. Full disk images (-disk1.img) for older releases (at least 10.04).
   4. Disable the 5 second grub menu, by default. It was really only necessary
to
change the command line options, but now with the easy nocloud from ISO,
I think
we should shave the 5 seconds off boot.

  ---

  User Stories:
Thomas has encountered an issue deploying Ubuntu Cloud images and can access
a rescue snapshot via the Elastic Block Store volume to take advantage of a SSH
shell to help debug the issue.

Leah would like to speed up the boot process and can take advantage of
nocloud from ISO, and thus would like to disable the 5 second boot time-
out default in the grub menu.

Luke is looking for official Ubuntu AMIs and can easily find and launch
  the lasest from cloud.ubuntu.com/ami

Rachel is a Lucid Ubuntu Cloud user and take advantage of a full disk
  image.

  Assumptions:
  n/a

  Test Plans:
Deploy EBS rescue volume and utilize ssh to access a defunct cloud image.

Deploy default latest cloud image and confirm grub does not have a 5
  second time out.

Get user feedback on easily finding the latest AMI on
cloud.ubuntu.com/ami and being easily able to launch it.

  Release Notes:
When work is complete add information pertaining to Lucid full disk images,
rescue EBS shots, and improvements to cloud.ubuntu.com.
+
+ ---
+ [21-Sep-2012: a.rosales] As 3/5 of the work items are implemented, and there
is no single overarching deliverable for this blueprint I am marking the
implementation status as implemented. We will need to carry forward:
+ * Build Rescue EBS Snapshots
+ * Work with IS to show only the latest images on cloud.ubuntu.com/ami

[Blueprint servercloud-q-juju-mir] Juju MIR

2012-09-21 Thread Antonio Rosales
Blueprint changed by Antonio Rosales:

Whiteboard changed:
Status: all txaws patches were accepted upstream and uploaded, so the
universe dependencies have been cut significantly. Zookeeper MIR +1'd
pending a documentation addition about securing traffic. This MIR,
however, has been shelved given that the port to go is nearing
completion, and it no longer makes much sense to do all of the work
necessary to bring the python version up to the level that is required
  for main inclusion.

Lowered priority to low. Given the current port to go-lang, it might
make sense to get that version into universe for 12.10 and push for an
  MIR in 13.04 [robbiew]
+
+ [21-Sep-2012: a.rosales] Work items are complete, however the MIR for
+ Juju will be evaluated for 13.04. Thus, marking the Implementation of
+ this blueprint as deferred.

[Bug 1054129] Re: reboot with -vga cirrus can result in broken output

2012-09-21 Thread Joseph Salisbury
Would it be possible for you to test the latest upstream kernel? Refer
to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Please test the latest
v3.6 kernel[0] (Not a kernel in the daily directory) and install both
the linux-image and linux-image-extra .deb packages.

Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please remove the 'needs-
upstream-testing' tag. Please only remove that one tag and leave the
other tags. This can be done by clicking on the yellow pencil icon next
to the tag located at the bottom of the bug description and deleting the
'needs-upstream-testing' text.

If this bug is fixed in the mainline kernel, please add the following
tag 'kernel-fixed-upstream'.

If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, please add the tag:
'kernel-bug-exists-upstream'.

If you are unable to test the mainline kernel, for example it will not boot,
please add the tag: 'kernel-unable-to-test-upstream'.
Once testing of the upstream kernel is complete, please mark this bug as
Confirmed.

Thanks in advance.

[Bug 1054306] Re: ncftool list fails

2012-09-21 Thread Serge Hallyn
Ah, the problem appears to be in the parsing of this file,
/etc/modprobe.d/iwlwifi.conf:

# /etc/modprobe.d/iwlwifi.conf
# iwlwifi will dyamically load either iwldvm or iwlmvm depending on the
# microcode file installed on the system. When removing iwlwifi, first
# remove the iwl?vm module and then iwlwifi.
remove iwlwifi \
(/sbin/lsmod | grep -o -e ^iwlmvm -e ^iwldvm -e ^iwlwifi | xargs /sbin/rmmod) \
 /sbin/modprobe -r mac80211

enough to do the upgrade by booting with -vga std, upgraded to the new
